You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all
Recently picked up a 2015 scott genius 700 but it appears I didn't do my checks quite well enough.
I noticed yesterday there is a crack in the carbon wheel (pls see pic)
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AsJ0TKCkyN9l8SjA0StdFv4cI5mn
It looks worse in the image than in the flesh.
It seems like it's just the outer layer that's flaking. I assume it's still part of the carbon and not just a cosmetic layer?
When I press the area hard there is no movement.
Do you think it'll be OK to just pop some epoxy on it and keep my fingers Crossed?
Thanks v much!
Question 2 to follow in a new thread!
It looks worse in the image than in the flesh.
I can't tell from the photos but there looks to be a white mark perpendicular to the crack where the composite has been bent (or it might be a refelction). If so, it's had quite a whack.
I've had carbon repairs done on road wheels, including bonding a new brake track after it delaminated, but I'm not sure that's salvageable. My carbon repair bloke would know but he's in Spain so probably not much use to you.
Is that another small crack above the spoke on the right?
Looks like there's a flat spot in that area so probably taken a decent whack.
That looks f*cked.
Clear crack & clear mis-shaped rim.
I wouldn't be riding that. Or trying to fix it.
Deed.
Oh ****.
How much do recon a rebuild with a new rim would cost?
Any recommendations?
Thanks all.
Depends. What was it?
I'd pick something with a similar ERD so you can just rim transplant.
Thanks
It's a syncros carbon tr1
Just got a quote on a new rim - £800 :/
Are there any alternatives that would work for less £ but similar performance?
Thanks again
I cracked both front and rear carbon rims within a few weeks of each other and had new rims and spokes on both. I think it cost about £250 ish to have done.
I have repaired carbon rims myself, however, I would expect that the rim bed / bead would be damaged and could go at any time - bin it unless you have good dental insurance
Get the wheel rebuilt using a suitable replacement from China e.g. Light Bicycle, iCan, Carbon Speed
Just whack an allow rim on and never worry about an 800quid rim ever again.
Hi all
Thanks for the help.
So the wheel I believe is the below:
Does anyone know what the original rim is - I'm told it's a DT Swiss, and would like to know which DT Swiss rim I can get as a like for like replacement.
Cheers
🙂
The expensive bit of a carbon wheel is the carbon rim
828 - 800 = £28 for hub and spokes !!!!
just buy a new wheel - or better buy a less expensive rim of the aluminium variety
I've been quoted around £100 for a repair to the rim that will be structurally sound.
Do you guys think this will be OK.
Considering I rode it 3 times over the weekend and it hasn't got any worse, I'm hopeful it may be OK to repair.
I;ll wear a full face helmet for gentle XC duties 🙂
If I had to have a wheel snap on me, I would rather have it be the rear. And I'm a tightwad, so I'd go for it 😀
I got a similar quote for a repair on a rear Giant one a few weeks back. I haven't gone ahead with it as I just don't know that I would trust the wheel. I bought a new wheel, it was a sore outlay of £350....

I'm no expert....... but that's not the question. Is the guy who's quoted you for that repair one?
I'd need to see the rim close-up to determine whether its repairable - many carbon repair outfits won't touch a rim repair where the structural part of the rim is damaged / cracked
Thanks DB
I've attached some further pics with the rim tape and tyres off..
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

My personal opinion based on the detailed photos is that's not repairable. From the outside it's pretty clear to see the rim has a fairly big flat spot. Also it looks like there are two more cracks either side at the ends of the flat spot (to the left 3-4mm from the edge of the orange sticker, to the right pretty much over the spoke) If the damage was only to the outside of the rim it might be worth trying to repair.
The pictures of the inside are more telling, there is a delamination that runs along the corner where the rim bed meets the flange (it shows as a pale line in that corner). It also looks as if the wheel has been set up tubeless? (looks like stans has soaked into the biggest crack) If this is the case any repair plies that are put onto the inside of the rim just won't bond to the cracked area.. So you''ll have a rim with extra plies of carbon added to the outside and possibly the inside which won't be bonded to the actual damage, doesn't sound ideal. The only real way to repair it would be to grind away all of the damaged areas and rebuild it, lots of work in doing that though, without question way more than £100 worth of time. Before getting it repaired I'd be asking the repairer exactly how they are going to approach it, how they are going to deal with the damage being soaked in sealant (if it is) and how they are going to make the inside damage good.

Thanks A
Thats massively helpful. I'll send it off and see what they say.
Do appreciate your help. I'll be prepared to expect the worst!
Cheers RT
Don't send the rim just yet... You've already sent the photos, just ask them more questions, if you don't get a detailed response I'd be skeptical, in fact if they didn't immediately ask about tubeless sealant I'd be skeptical. It's very easy to just slap a few more layers of carbon onto something and proclaim it's repaired, it's altogether more difficult to ensure it actually is repaired! One of the reasons I stopped doing anything other than very basic repairs, there are too many unknowns even on a very simple repair to confidently know that the repair will hold. This isn't a simple repair, and for someone to say they can do it for 100 quid rings alarm bells (with me at least)
If it were me, I'd carry on riding it with careful and frequent inspection, and I'd get another rim on standby for when the inevitable happens! I'm in exactly this situation myself and the damaged wheel has been going strong for over a year..
Cheers
Thanks again.
The response i got was that they need to see it in the flesh to give an accurate assessmnt.
I guess that's fair??
I did email 3 other repair places and bone of them came back to me in the last 48 hrs.
I’d rather replace with a good Alu rim like a DT XM421/481 or EX 471/511 and have peace of mind, a more robust product, and more money in your pocket.
