I've got a 100k ride this afternoon, and the same in reverse on Sunday. Cambridge to nearish Leicester.
Given the forecast of a bit of lightish rain, do I take the shiny road bike with the carbonium rim brakes, or the slower and more stately CX bike with discs?
My friend is leaving at around 2pm (with his son in tow, doing a lot of stopping). I leave an hour later. On the road bike I'm pretty sure I'll catch him, on the CX bike it's pretty unlikely and I'll be Billy no Mates the entire way.
The road bike is a lot nicer to ride if I'm honest. And I guess brake pads are there to be used.
Perhaps I've answered my own question.
I ride a lot in the rain, my rims are 2013 I think, and the front is worn but still got life in it. Problem is going through black swissstops like they're sweets.
Swissstop black knights are superb on carbon rims. It’s not the rain that’s the issue; it’s the road muck mixing with the rain to form a grinding paste.
Clear answer is not to brake and don’t forget to clean your wheels and pads when you stop: a good squirt of water from a bidon helps.
200k will be no bother.
Looks like there's some light rain, rather than just an occasional hint of dampness. And since there's a short off-road section on the route anyway which will likely now be quite muddy, I think I might as well take the cross bike.
Use the front brake only on the first day and back brake only on the second day.
why would you be braking on a solo road ride?
🤔
Should have taken the road bike. Oh well. Will have to find some damp bridleways tomorrow.
