I'm thinking of a new road bike this year DI2, with ultrega discs. Both Canyon and Cube offer the specs, canyon are slightly cheaper but I have been offered the cube for only £50 more than the canyon from an actual real bike shop, with the back up that comes with that.
Is there anything to choose between the frames (ignoring geometry, as that is preference) but in quality? Are cube scrimping on frames to put on decent kit? Are canyon doing the same or is a canyon frame as good as Trek/Spesh???
I'm put out off canyon with the lack of demos (especially in Scotland) and potential lack of back up, but is there anything to worry about with a cube carbon frame??
Any help appreciated.
from an actual real bike shop, with the back up that comes with that.
i'd go Cube just for this. especially as both Canyon and Cube tend to measure their frames slightly different to the mainstream. there is no substitute for sitting on the actual model you are buying, even better to get a test ride even if brief
but is there anything to worry about with a cube carbon frame??
no, they are made in the same chinese factories as everyone elses frame
Biggest issue is quality control with carbon frames.
As mentioned above - both make their frames in Asia. Quality issues normally show up pretty quick.
How does Canyon or Cube handle such potential warranty claims?
No idea.
I own a Cube (Agree Race 2014) and a Canyon (Ultimate CF SLX). Both carbon but at different ends of the market. The Canyon is much stiffer, lighter and I think it is better put together than the Cube. The Canyon also handles better than the Cube but that is due to geometry so depends on what bikes you’re looking at. I’d buy both brands again and imagine they would be very similar at the same price levels. Sizing is very different between the brands, I’m 6 foot and ride a 58 Cube and a 54 Canyon. I had a bike fit before buying the Canyon which saved me from buying the wrong sized frame!
I cracked the Cube and it was replaced via the bike shop without issue or hassle.
Big fan of Canyon, I have an Aeroad CF SXL. Previously had other top level frames from Trek and Giant, also other lower level carbon frames from Planet X and Rose. The canyon is up there with my Madone and Emonda SLR. More livelier than the Madone but not quite as comfortable as the Emonda.
In August last year I was fortunate enough to be in a position to buy a new aero bike with a large budget. I looked at a new Madone, Systemsix, Venge (not S-Works) and Aeroad. After test rides I couldn’t see past the Aeroad, got it in the Aug sale for £3k which was £4K cheaper than the others.
If the bike you’re looking at is the Agree C62 SLT Disc, think that’s going for sub £3k now, that’s going to be very good frame. Probably fair to say the C62 SL frames are equivalent to a CF SXL. Personally though I’d be looking at the other components as well. Canyon will likely have a nicer cockpit and potentially better wheels.
I’ve always supported my LBS but the Canyon deal was just too good to be true. Kind of feel dirty about that, like I’ve cheated on my wife with a cheap woman from the internet!
Size wise, for me the Canyon size calculator was accurate. Canyon do size up, I previously rode Trek’s H1 sizing in a 52 frame (5foot 8). Canyon I was between sizes, XS or S. Went with the small as was able to test ride.
That Aeroad is a looker. The best looking aero road bike and get that if it’s between the two. From a fully paid up Giant Fanboi with a pair of Propels. Canyon n road but kea have a very good reputation. The only thing to be wary of is press fit BBs which have a habit of creaking in all carbon frames.
