need to decide this weekend.
i have an option on high-spec 2011 turner 5-spot, an ibis mojo sl (which i will build from frame up) or a new canyon nerve am 8.0x
which should i go for?
want something for xc and trail centre fun & games... have just come out of a turner flux and want a bit more travel
cheers
Having ridden a mojo sl last week I would go for that.
Loooovely bike. Pedals up well, but still nice and supple going down.
Plusit looks the dogs..
The Mojo and the 2011 Turner both use the DW link suspension system so will have a similar ride. I know the Turner warranty is transferable to the second owner with origonal proof of purchase so thats a bonus. Is the Mojo new or used?
The older turners and Mojos had a slightly steeper head angle that has been reduced on later bikes (2011 for Turner) so if your looking for something that rides like your flux but has a bit more travel and feels really strong i would go for the Turner. (But I do own one) 😀
The Canyon bikes seem to get very good reviews for value etc, and seem well specced for the money. The Nerve looks like a standard Horst link 4 bar, so all good there. That is pretty much what the old Turner was too. I would say the newer designs have moved things forward a bit though.
(yes I know Turner were forced to stop using the Horst link)
I've got a 2011 5-spot, but I've not ridden any of the others, so I can't really comment.
Canyon have virtually no after market presence in the UK, and if you look around there are increasingly stories of difficulty getting proprietary parts for the bikes.
By contrast, you're unlikely to find better customer service from Turner.
I'd go for the Mojo, just as capable as the 5-Spot but the frame is over a pound and half lighter. I've a Mojo HD140, it's the only frame I've bought that I've never fancied changing. I'd always wanted a Nicolai but aluminium has had its day when it comes to XC/trail bikes!
I've ridden long-term the Ibis and I own a Turner - so there's my pick. I went for the Turner as I know if I crashed on the Ibis and dinged a tube, when I came to sell it the potential damage inside which you can't see would put buyers off whereas damage on a Turner is there for everyone to see and the after-sales service for Turners is second to non. As is the warranty issue. Both bikes ride nearly the same, the Ibis is very quiet for a carbon frame and both bikes climb well and descend well. I am biased as I'm a Turner fan but having seen so many Ibis SL's and HD's at work I'm sort of bored of them now and they don't look that special anymore. They are nice frames but I just like the Turner and it's lovely tubes and paintwork.
As said above the Turner and Mojo should feel similar due to the DW-link, but another benefit of the turner is the ability to use Angleset and off-set bushings to slacken the bike out if you want to. The Mojo (I ride one and love it by the way) has an IS headset which at the moment is not compatible with any of the available angle set headsets. Off-set bushings may work, but there is a split opinion it seems.
I wanted a DW-link bike as I liked the one I rode and then it came down to getting the same travel but for less weight, which is always a good thing on long rides, that swayed form turner to Ibis.
As a Canyon AM owner I'd pick the Turner as the sweet spot imo in the Canyon range is the AM7 with a reverb upgrade and I haven't heard great thing about Ibis's warranty support.
thanks for all your replies and the very helpful emails from hadge.
i have just bought myself a 2011 yeti asr5 alloy ex-demo from bromley cycles... for the grand sum of £1,250.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
spec included fox 32 rlc fit 120's, mavic crossrides, xtr rear mech with carbon plates, xt other bits (with a bit of slx thrown if for good measure), Schwalbe DD/Snakeskin tyres, easton & truativ finishing kit.
needless to say, i am VERY happy with my purchase!
i will put a more general post up, but if anyone is after an absolute steal, Bromley have a few more ex-demo Yetis (a very nice carbon Santa Cruz Blur) they are prepared to let go for peanuts!
right... time to buy myself a reverb and some other bits & bobs.
Blimey, that's a bit of a bargain!
Would you mind letting me know the details of the 5 spot you were looking at and what size it is?
the 5-spot is with silverfish in their ex-demo sale. it is an absolute bargain!
i agreed £1,900.00 delivered with them. spec reads as follows:-
2011 everything
size large - orange powdercoat
fox rlc 140 kashmina forks
hope pro ii evo / xc 717 wheels
10-speed xt/slx
raceface turbine chainset
formula the one brakeset
raceface atlas bars
raceface turbine stem
nukeproof headset
sdg seatpost/saddle ibeam combo
there is one VERY expensive kit on that bike (brakes being the obvious one) and the kashmina forks are nice to see.
apparently, the bike is totally mint.
bearing in mind what i want to do to the yeti (full 2012 2x10 xt, reverb, hope/pro wheels, new headset, new bars/stem etc etc), the cost will come out almost the same as if i went for the 5-spot.
might even buy the 5-spot, swap some bits over and sell the yeti...have 24hrs to work out what to do... lol
has an IS headset which at the moment is not compatible with any of the available angle set headsets.
Is that right? I didn't know that and had assumed that it was just an internal headset standard 1.5" rather than the integrated standard.

At first I thought that was quite a bit to pay for an ex-dem frame. Then I realised it's the whole bike, which does make it a bit of a bargain.
Enjoy; mate of mine rides one and he loves it and still manages some stuff that you wouldn't expect a bike like that to thrown at.
If that demo was an XL I'd buy it. Bah.
