My Thompson seatpost has developed a fault. It’s is fine in the up position, but in the drop position it rises about halfway back up as soon as I take my weight off it.

Is there a simple fix or does it need a trip to the LBS for some open wallet surgery*? What does STW think?

The only thing you can do with Thomson seat post is try adjusting the cable tension

Anything else is a return to approved agent for repair under warranty (2 years) or service.

No service instructions/spare parts available from Thomson, supposed to send it to i-ride in the UK.

DIY (in another language)

Relax the cable tension a bit and cross your fingers. My old elite dropper (well past warranty) doesn't fully extend any more, which apparently means the cartridge is borked. There are a couple of online guides to stripping the thing down, but it requires fabricating a couple of bodged tools and being very careful with 100+ psi.

I have no idea on what the problem may be, but I want to congratulate you on an excellent thread title. 👏👏

If its not your cable and less than 2 years i-ride will fix for free (or technically cost of post one way)
emailed them and sent a copy of a receipt from 1yr 11mo... they gave me a return number and I sent it off and back a few days later like new.

Thanks all, a pretty consistent message there.

I’ll tinker with the cable tension and if that doesn’t work send it back – unfortunately well beyond its second birthday.

@tthew – cheers.

It’s around £90 for a new cartridge and bushings etc which basically gives you brand new internals.
I gave up on my 2 Thomson posts after having to do that a few times and just bought BX ones instead for basically the same cost as the service on the Thomson and haven’t had to touch them in over a year so far.
Thomson lovely when it’s working but quite pricy to have fixed, which isn’t really a fix it’s just new internals.

Tried the suggestion to loosen the cable tension and it worked perfectly. So thanks everyone.
