Both alu frames, I have it in my mind that Cannondale are good with alu or is it just the CAAD stuff which is good (the slate is not CAAD).
Rigid lefty vs blade carbon - don't mind.
The Whyte has it on the drivetrain with Rival over Apex, both hydraulic brakes, both 1X.
Is there any reason to choose one over the other which I'm missing?

If it were me i'd get the slate as I like C'dale and think the slate looks awesome. But trying to put some objectiveness into it I guess i'd consider the trails I were riding. If mostly smooth, roads/paths etc then maybe the Whyte, and if the trails were a bit more bumpy the Slate. I've had a C'dale with a lefty and it was a brilliant fork, but on a smooth road or trail even in lock-out it's not as good as a rigid fork.

I just sorted the wife out with a Whyte hybrid this weekend. Only one towards the cheaper end of the range but i'm mightily impressed.

The apex hasn't a sus lefty, just a carbon rigid job.

One is designed in USA, one in Britain. My bet is on the one designed for riding in our filthy mud

I dont get the point of a rigid lefty, none of the benefits but still stuck with annoying hub compatibility.

It beats a 30mm lefty that the original slate was specced with, that's for sure.
Like wobbliscott I'm a fan of CDale - they pioneered aluminium bike design - but the time that really meant something was 20 years ago, when not everyone knew how to make a quality aluminium bike. So one should respect the heritage, but I doubt they're doing anything out of the ordinary in fabrication nowadays. Their designs are strong, though, so it just comes down to riding the two of them and seeing what clicks.

The Slate takes a max rear tyre of 42mm, limiting tyre choice as it's 650b, Schwalbe G-One is the only real performance tyre for off road use easily available currently. It's not as slack as the Whyte, far more agile; the Lefty fork is serviced by TF Tuned, so factor that into the cost of ownership every 100 hours. I looked at both the Whyte and C-dale, plumped for the Slate, glad I did, great fun bikes that divide opinion. Lefty was more than up to the Reiver last Saturday, no sore hands or shoulders...still had to pedal the damn thing though.

Some interesting points, thanks. I'm assuming that a guard can't be fitted to the lefty?
Is the rival stuff much better than apex?
Seriously considering the gusburn too. It's got a dropper.....

There is a specific Lefty Oliver guard available, only online, can't remember what the site is though. Shall post later if I remember.

I've been tempted by a Slate (LBS has the 105 spec'ed one in) to replace my Kaffenback after buying a Cannondale Beast of the East, I've always been a steel fan but Cannondale got know their stuff and have been impressed with the BofE.

But for my the spec - price is a bit off for me. It has a similar groupset as my Kaffenback (minus hydro brakes) for around £1000 more! So for me no upgrade... I also looked at the CAADX but it hasn't got a very commuter friendly (admittedly fat and unfit) groupset.

So decided to leave it..... might treat myself to a new frame.....

On my suspension lefty I used an SKS front mudguard. It attaches via an expandable bung that goes up into the steerer tube from the bottom. The much larger dia of the Lefty steerer meant I had to pad out the bung with tape, took a bit of trial and error to get it working but I used that for a couple of years while I had the bike. Not a full guard but pretty effective.

Saw one of the slate apex' yesterday. Very nice, seriously tempted.
It is pricey but I have some particular requirements; no QR's, space for 45mm tyres, hydros, 1x11. 650b is a preference for the new road plus tyres.
There just aren't many bikes available with this stiff for less, or not that I have found.

Just bought a Slate Apex, it arrives (hopefully) on Friday ready for the bank holiday weekend. I'll put my thoughts up once I have it built up out of the box.

Does anyone have a link to the correct SKS mudguard to get?

Is it just a shockboard with this:

Has anyone any experience of the new Orange RX9?
Looks great on paper, probably better than both the whyte and cannonade offerings.

Bang for buck if you don't mind the brand that is.... Planet X would be the place to look.
Not being funny or nothing, just £1600 (1250 if your looking at that Tiagra spec) seems a lot of an aluminium framed "road'ish" bike with cable pull brakes.
PX do a Ti framed bike for £99 more with hydro brakes.

Depends how much you like/di-like PX.....

The new one is pretty good. Hydros, full 1x11 rival set up, carbon blades and space for 42mm tyres. The wheels aren't great but for £1700, it looks good compared to the competition. Looks good too. http://www.jejamescycles.com/orange-rx9-pro-gravel-bike-2018.html?gclid=CKezw-2l8dMCFaeT7Qodv5EP_Q

I suppose I'm out of touch... seems a lot for a aluminium framed bike. I suppose the "high volume adventure bike" is still bit new.

The Vitus Energie VR has a similar set up for less money. If I was going to spend 1700ish I would be looking at a On-One Pickenflick, £99 more than the Orange, and you get a Titanium frame and Force 1 groupset.

Or a couple of plastic bikes..

Just my opinion and worth what was paid for it...

Have you seen Wheelbase deals on the TOTR Slate?

http://www.wheelbase.co.uk/cannondale-slate-sram-force-cx1-2017.html?___SID=U

Apex is down a bit as well but not as much of discount.

http://www.wheelbase.co.uk/cannondale-slate-apex-1-blc-2017.html?___SID=U

Full range.

Hi, anyone compared/tested both Slate to Canyon INFLITE?

I'm deciding between Cannonade Slate Apex1 and Canyon INFLITE AL SLX 8.0 PRO RACE...

Any thoughts on that?
