After three years of trusty service, the 30t single chainring on my bike looks to be on its last legs.

Cannondale being Cannondale, there is a unique tool to remove the crank arm (purchased) and to attach to the locking ring (to purchase, albeit Park do one, it's the same as spesh and FSA).

I did wonder about an aftermarket brand, maybe absolute black oval or something, but their interface pattern, as below,

https://absoluteblack.cc/cannondale-oval-direct-mount-chainring.html

looks different to the stock item that's fitted, as below,

https://www.cannondalespares.com/Cannondale-SpideRing-X-Sync-30T-Chainring--CU4041SI30/product_detail/3-42138

As in, the AB version has some flats on the interface whereas Cannondale has a full circle of wibbles.

Is this yet another standard for direct mount, even in the same brand? Or can I just miss interfacing all the wibbles, providing the "male" wibble just goes into fresh air of the flat, if that makes sense?

The flats are just to get the orientation right.

Oval 1x rings and Cannondale 2x spiderrings have them because you need the ovalisation or the shift ramps to be in the right places respectively, but round 1x rings can be mounted however you feel looks best.. because they're round.

BTW be careful with the crank pullers, I nearly stripped the threads in the crank arm because the hard steel piece wasn't deeply engaged enough in the soft alu crankarm. But if it's too deep it won't work.

Thanks timb,

managed to get the crank off OK with the proper cannondale tool.

Regarding the ring, there are no flat sections on the crack, it's profiled all the way around so the flats on the ring will surely foul the profile?

Edit, the AB round has flats too, so why would this need orientation?

Check the chainring offset as well, I know Cannondale do a flatter one and a more dished one.

I've only seen the spline pattern on one Cannondale crank arm - mine..

It only has lumps around the outside, not next to the arm itself. Like the pictures here https://r2-bike.com/CANNONDALE-Crank-Arm-Hollowgram-SiSL2-right

So the flats on chainrings can only go either side of the arm. Sorry can't really help more than that

Timb, you are right…..I’ve had another look and mine is like that so that does open the ring options up. Offset to consider too, might just get another like for like, for simplicity.

Does it have to be direct mount? I fitted a Cannondale Hollowgram Ai Spider for XX1 to my bike and now use any 76bcd chainrings I want. It also means I can swap rings without removing the crank.
