Hello all,
I bought a prophet last week with a Lefty fork and thought i would remove the front wheel (don't ask why) to see how it all worked. So as i removed it this Helicoil came out (i didn't know what it was at first)and i was confused as to what it was! Anyway the threads ended up getting a bit chewed so i took it along to a friends garage and he said that re-tapping it @ 10x1.5 (that's the only size he had) would be ok as the original is 10x1.0 the bold should still fit......WRONG!
Basically it is in the bike shop at the min with a 10x1.5 helicoil in and im fearing the worst!
If the bike shop cant fix it do you think i could fill the hole in the Lefty's axel with a industrial chemical metal then re-drill-tap and put the correct helicoil in?
Hope this makes sense 🙂

The problem you have is that 1.0 is a fine thread so trying some metal cement and retapping would more than likely not give enough "bite" to the axel and it would drop off. To be honest i reckon its buggered unless your LBS are magicians. I work in engineering building and repairing woodworking machines and threads can be real buggers, especially if your trying to reduce it down.
Suppose the moral of the story is get the right tools for the job.
😕
EDIT- could maybe see if you can get a bigger helicoil and redrill and tap for that one? depends how much you wanna gouge out of the one fork thats supporting you at the front.

monkey - i would not risk a repair on it, its such a vital component that i failure does occur you could hurt yourself. sorry

Morning, I fixed one of my lefty's by making a threaded insert, M10x1.0 on the outside and m8x1.0 on the inside, i now use a square type bottom bracket bolt to attatch wheel. It has worked well for over three years being used a couple of time a week.

Any quality engineering workshop shop should be able to fix it easily, emphasis on engineering not mechanic.

I would not trust chemical metal with threads cut in them, the stresses put on them when turning etc would be to great, you will get badly hurt.

If you want pictures of mine let me know.

If the new threads are good, why do you not replace the original bolt with on of M10x1.5, there is nothing special about the cannondale bolt, other than it is stainless steal.

Not chemical metal but an insert could be used

there is a 10x1 one

You need a decent engineering shop
