never been down to either so thinking of driving down from Sheffield tomorrow - anyone know what the conditions are like at the moment? has there been much snow & ice down there? if so has it cleared? thanks in advance
I was there at the weekend and there was some frozen snow but given the temps we've had since and the rain I'd put a very firm bet on that there's none at all now and I wouldn't hestitate to go if I had the time. (temps in double figures today and tomorrow) Even the snow and ice that was there was all on the off piste, the way marked trails were all clear bar a few puddles. So I'd say go for it.
Do you need directions to Stile cop from the monkey? you can end up going a long way out of the way up fireroads if you don't know the way.
thanks for the trail update Jekkyl. yes directions to stile cop would be great. I've got the postcode of both so was probably just going to jump in the car, but if there's an easy ride through that would be great
I'll try and describe it and I really hope you don't get lost. If you use a garmin I can send you a gpx from a ride I did recently which will lead you straight in. PM me!
After you descend upper cliff you will come down a fireroad to the start of the climb to the top of lower cliff, it is called 'Insidious Incline' - instead of going through the wooden gate thing to climb 'Insidious Incline' go right up the fireroad. You climb very gradually and the fireroad bends round to the left. Not very far along the trees will break on your left and the fireroad you are on bends round to the right. at this point looking left through the trees you will see several tracks intersecting about 100m down to the left, leave the fireroad and head left down a little rooty drop and go straight over that intersection. Heading down that muddy unmade track for about another 200m you will hit another fireroad, go left here and continue on that for about err 300 ish metres, maybe a bit further and you'll come to the bottom of stile cop. It's not far away and you can't miss it as there's a sign and you can see all the tracks heading up the hill. That's it basically, dead simple really round the corner and to the left. Follow the main track up the middle of stile cop, walking or cycling if you're a beast and you'll get to the top. Look for the map showing the runs, as a good starter look for the red run to do first as it runs through and alongside some others and is a good starter, there are sort of 2 start areas but are very close.
Have Fun!
Jekkyl is spot on with the directions but if you can't find the turning or go past it just follow the fire road up it will bring you to a main road turn left on this road and stile cop is just on the left ( this is the longer way)
Stile cop is in Miflins Valley / Regents Wood.
cheers guys, looking forward to it
Rode FTD/Monkey this morning, absolutely fine, just standing water.
Only a couple of bits closed, both on FTD.
