Been riding local trails to me for a couple years so been able to use lighter, faster xc tyres on my whyte t130, been running 2.6 vittoria mezcal and barzo. Going to cannock chase tomorrow, not been for years, will these tyres be fine or will I die a firey death unless I switch to somthing with more knobs?

You'll be more than fine, you can do most of it on a gravel bike.

As a Cannock local I’d you’re just going to the trail centre any tyres will be fine/similarly useless.

Tbh I just ride whatever tyres my bike is fitted with and deal with it, it doesn’t seem to make any difference at Cannock unless you have something with stupidly thin sidewalls or mud tyres with long flexible knobs that wander around everywhere.

long flexible knobs that wander around everywhere

I hate it when my long flexible knob wanders around everywhere. Just the worst...

It’s an issue I’ve read about (in the specialist press) but never experienced myself.

Went a few weeks back for an afternoon ride when it had been raining all morning. Midly knobbly front, semi-slick rear, absolutely fine. The trails are mostly hardpack.

You can now get an appliance fitted to keep that under control.

I did it in the Summer, very dry/dusty on slicks (26" rigid bike). No problem at all. Then in the car park you see people with tyres suitable for going through the mud/bogs of Rannoch Moor.
Even when its wet, you can get away with minimal tread tyres, and suspension. It is really easy.

Yup, and also they're bloody huge! Countless people race national XC at Cannock on 2.25" barely treaded tyres and (pretty much) survive

Is it just me or are the flints at cannock bloody slippy in the wet? Regardless had a great time and need to get away on the bike more often

That used to be a big complaint of a former forum user!😁

I’ve never been too bothered - but geologically speaking it’s very similar to my local trails and itself is only 20 or so miles away and a place I have ridden for in four decades.

In the damp/wet no tyre works on the (older) armoured track made of the roundish stones.
