New Cane Creek 40 series ZS44 headset kit all parts fit, except getting the crown race onto 1 1/8 ribble supplied blackstorm road fork which had race on it before no problem. Have done the PVC tube as home mde tool, cleaned up faces of steerer tube, its going on level and square. If I hit it any harder its going to break something. Never had this issue before, feel LBS required with proper tool.
Any tips, warm race? - fork wont fit in freezer before you ask.
Cut it with a junior hacksaw.
Dremel surely. Junior hacksaw 🙄
LOL. OK, if you already gave a Dremel then that'll work too.
As above - turn it into a 'split' race with a cut (don't cut the rubber seal if it has one)
Its not getting the old one off thats the problem, its getting the new one on.
Aye. Cut it through to make a "split race", then it'll slip on easily.
hmm, will give ice and heat a try before splitting it
Just go for the split, there’s no reason not to have one as the bearing compresses the race into the steerer anyway.
I’ve cut every race I’ve dealt with for as long as I can remember
ok ok, have managed to squeeze fork into freezer so once workover this evening will give it another go and failing that will get hacksaw out
I had a tricky 110 one a few years back, total pita without the proper tool, canecreek need to join the split crown revolution.
Just cut the crown race and slide it straight on
Like everyone else has said - just split it.
update - steerer tube bearing seat is a bonded alloy collar. It had a small shoulder on it that the race was not sliding over. A very cautious file down of the lip with small fine file, plus the freezing of the fork and heating of the race managed to persuade it to fit. I dont think it will come off in a hurry
