Is there any reason I shouldn't? Chain reaction have them for about £15 at the mo and it means I can use my (recently cleaned) mtb shoes on all my bikes.
I'm guessing that it's some kind of road riding faux pas but other than that is there really any practical reason why I shouldn't?
Nope, if your shoes can take 2-bolt cleats. Although I do prefer my look pedals on my road bike and candies on my MTB, the looks just feel more secure and stiff.
I'm guessing that it's some kind of road riding faux pas....
I am wearing baggies and a Giro Hex, spent all the cash on the bike, so I wouldn't worry about it.
I have standard Shimano mtb clipless pedals on my road bike - oh the shame! I think you are 'more clipped in' with road pedals, but I couldn't say for sure.
They'll be alright, depends how 'serious' you want to be. Those plastics bodies wear pretty damn quick though.
depends how 'serious' you want to be.
I think I'll just start off with a serious expression to begin with.
If you shave your legs, then you'll be taken more seriously.
They'll be fine but I'd go for the Shimano 520s on CRC for a fiver more - much better pedals IMO.
oh dear.
would you wear road kit on an mtb? there have to be standards old boy otherwise they will be chaos.
You can of course, but real road shoes are way better than MTB shoes on road bikes. They would probably be on MTBs too but you wouldn't be able to get off and walk 🙂
I don't think you're more clipped in with look pedals, but the power transfer is definitely much better - this is mostly down to the shoe sold I think but perhaps due to more support from the cleat and pedal.
If you are a powerhouse, you might find that your feet hurt because of too much pressure on the small cleat area. Especially if you don't have nice stiff soled shoes. That's what happened to me when I started doing serious miles 🙁 Got SPD-SLs and they are soo much comfier. Nice big contact area, no hotspots on the ball of my feet, no more issues with my ankle etc.
Grum 😆
RULE 34:
Mountain bike shoes and pedals have their place. On a mountain bike.

But in all seriousness, they'll be ok. It's just road pedals are much stiffer, and over a longer distance are more comfortable.
I run them on mine, mainly because I didn't want to have to buy another set of pedals & pair of shoes.
I use Candys on my "fast" road bike in the winter - so I can wear my MW80s - and on my touring/commuting road bike all year round. They have a little bit of platform which means they are more comfortable on longer trips than a standard "Shimano"/Eggbeater style pedal but you can still walk around on the cleat, unlike the roadies style.
The Shimano A520 are another options.
Personally, I'd be avoiding any of the older style Candys as reliability has been a bit of an issue (though all mine have been fine). The newer ones (1,2,3, & 11s) come with a 3 or 5 year warranty and are much better designed and built.
I have them on my commuter road bike (left over from a new MTB purchase) and they are horrible to get into esp in the wet and they are way to floaty and sloppy - I keep wanting them to break so I can get something better! Admittedly 07' versions
I've been using Candys on my road bikes for years and they work fine.
They have some pretty huge mileages on them with no issues at all. Think I might have re-greased them once, if that.
I have the cheaper smarties on my road bike, did it because i was running the same pedals on my mtb (although have now gone back to flats...) can't say as I have any problem with them. If / when they wear out I will probably invest in some "proper" road ones though, just because its the only bike I ride clipped in.
Got xt pedals on my road bike. Works fine.
I have to walk down a couple of granite stairs before i can hop on my bike. Impossible with road shoes cleats.
Is it only me who keeps reading the thread title as 'candles on a road bike'?
I've got all sorts of visions of victorian night riding contrivances.

no - thats what I read the title as several times before I realised what it said!
I have eggbeaters on both the road and mtb, it's pretty hard to see the pedals once you're on the bike 🙂
I use Candys on my road bike, dont find any problems with sore feet on 200mile rides, nor is there any problem with the longevity of the pedals.
Alot of our club members put MTB pedals on their winter road bikes (!) - not so worried about getting the disco slipper mucky when going for a pee in the verge on a muddy winter ride.
Just pretend you forgot to take them off!
Have Candies on commuter and mountain bike. Work fine and mean you can use 'sensible shoes' (and I don't mean that in a lesbian sense) for the commute. I've done an occasional commute on proper roadbike spd-sl pedals and carbon sole road shoes and had a few near death experiences trying to clip in when getting away at junctions and roundabouts

How many laps of Scotland is that?
Thanks, just got a pair 🙂 I did the maths and realised it was cheaper than cleats alone to get a set!
Same as a few others here; I have them on my roadie commuter. It does a fair few miles, they're holding up fine and I can wear my winter boots and have warm, dry feet for my commute. As it's not the posh roadbike I don't mind putting function before form... 😀
I've got normal SPD's on my roadie commuter but proper road pedals on my road bike, they're way more comfortable.
Even with the tension set quite slack you feel more secure on the pedal when on the bike, especially when out of the saddle.
What I don't get is commuters using road pedals and looking down all the tie to re-clip after stopping, just doesn't make sense in my book
ps what are candies ? 😉
