If he had worn a helmet, the polystyrene may have kept him affloat- Even I couldnt argue with such a benefit. I'll probably have to figure this one into future arguments. 😕

Yup, I've been on the local lake, after verification that the ice was pretty thick. The canals around here have been frozen solid for 2weeks+, still not sure I'd risk it on something so deep I couldn't stand to push myself back out though. Have you ever TRIED getting out of a pool of freezing water with cramps onto a teflon-like surface that's constantly fracturing around you?

i have seen someone go through the ice on the cut [canal] you have about no chance of getting out alone without rope and help- darwin in action- very foolish.
Canals are about 4-5 ft deep the lake was probably more dangerous.

To be serious, I also dont think its a good idea.
I've been looking at the sections of Union canal between Lithgae and Winchburgh and the ice looks pretty solid in places but there is a slow trickle of draining water from crossing bridges that looks like its keeping the ice a bit thinner in places. Dodgy.
I still remember falling through ice on Lochend pond when I was 14.
Water was only about 2ft deep but it was still a struggle to get out.

People have been doing that on parts of the Marple canal near me, can see tyre and foot prints in the snow covering the ice.
I'm going to try some XC skiing on it tomorrow - by my thinking the skis should spread the weight a lot more than a bike would so it'll be safer!

I would have no hesitation in that context but with children one should be more careful for everyone's sake, and my shots are entirely innocent.

[and I tested the ice by jumping up and down as hard as I could - no hint of movement]

Dont do it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the difference being that the canal had experienced uniform conditions and been frozen for a week, whereas a lake would be much more unpredictable

FFS get a grip - canals freeze. When they get strong enough to walk on you can walk on them. For a bunch of sporty types I have never heard such a bunch of wusses!

so make sure it's safe first 🙂 Plus except in the middle the water is shallow enough for me to stand with my head above the surface!

I know it looks solid enough, but, lead by example and all of that.

Me falling into the water is stupidity on my part, but any one else seeing me do it may do the same, 'accidents' (said in the loosest possible sense) do happen. And I don't know if i could deal with knowing someone else had fallen through.

Carry out a risk assessment, do some core-drill samples to confirm depth of ice, write to your MP, ring the EU people up to sort it out and then you can do it.

Now go and sit on the naughty step while you think about it.

f*ck drowning for a lark.

Never wear a pair of speedo's if the the "S" has worn off. Nothing to do with this thread but the photo of SB in those shorts and the last post made me think of it.

The canal is not as frozen as you might think.
In places here it is, then it's not 300m away, then frozen again.
Don't assume a thing.
I believed the canal was frozen solid. I was wrong.
Thank fully I had no desire to ride or walk on it to test the depth of ice.

The BBC Link:
Simon, no doubting it.
What possessed 4 brothers to do that?
I wonder if they'd "just got off the boat" and had no clue of what they were doing.
Or were daring each other.
Or were drunk. (Didn't a spectator at the Darts competition perish in a lake this week also)
Or were slightly simple.

yes, 100m away the surface was free water, under the bridge where it rarely freezes. I didn't think it was frozen solid, as I'm sure that would take weeks, and it only froze over last Friday...

The ice was 5 inches thick at the very edge of the canal near us, and still around 2 inches under the bridges. Easily thick enough for around 5 people to jump up and down on it the same place without a hint of movement. It took a huge section of tree and a lot of effort to get through 😀
