i can.......... 8)
just been on a mini dh course in Temple Newsome woods.
nice and smooth course with nice run in to 2 drops.
not big (18'' or 2ft mebee)for someone who can ride jumps/drops.
but a bit of a challange for a overweight Grandad.
anyhow, group of young lads on bmx's gave me a few pointers, so off i went.
cleaned em both no problem, then had another two run's just to make sure it was not a fluke.
i am/will be a dh god......... 😉
nice one, ton.
you might want to head up to Thackley soon and have a hand in some more development for a few drops and jumps for beginners or ahem the more advanced rider.
Will you teach me please?
Every time I get hung up about a jump or drop, when I finally ride it I realise it was pretty easy really and it's all a head game.
yes, learned both at the age of 5 it's much easier the earlier you start. my 2 yr old can drop kerbs on her balance bike confidently already and jump her scooter.
good on you for giving it a go. 😀
GW, i have a lovely warm all over glow now. all caused by you saying something nice to me............ 😉
😀
I used to quite comfortably do 6-8 foot drops, not pinkbike feet either. And I still can but have the fear these days. Small <3ft ones I take in my stride but bigger need encouragement these days. I've never been much cop at jumping tho. I plan to change that this summer.
I Ache, me too mate, gonna sign up for one of Great Rock's jumps for dad's courses. 8)
Yeah they're my favourite things to do on a bike. nothing beats the feeling of flowing through a set of dirt jumps 😀 Step downs feel amazing as well.
I've improved my jumping in the last few years and am reasonable a doing drops. Biggest I've done is about 8 ft so far. Big whips still elude me, but my tables are ok.
Jumping is one of the joys of riding a bike.
Ton I'm off to see Jedi later in the year along with sessions at the local jump spot crashing a lot.
I've gone in the other direction and am currently having a real problem with jumps and fast drop offs. My weight is far to far forward and I don't seem to be able t correct it. Big wipe out and flip over the bars yesterday as a result and I am struggling to move today! Need a skills course quickly.
Been quite confused by recent threads and talks of which wheel lands first etc. can't tell if any are wind ups or not?!?
Sancho
Is there new stuff on the Thackley side? Loving the Esholt ting 🙂
Am usually ok with drops up to a wheel diameter if the run in and runout is simple enough to get time to setup for the push. I simply cannot do jumps however small. Well done Ton BTW.
Love drops and step downs, once I've had a healthy chug of mtfu (increasingly difficult to come by these days) but can't jump to save my life! Can get airborne over the rough stuff but seem to struggle with tabletops and esp doubles!
Not terribly well - can ride nice tabletops ok, drops up to about four foot high when I'm feeling confident and the run in/out doesn't put me off my stride. Went down to my local dirt jumps yesterday and spent a few hours practising on the small step-up/tabletop, big table-top and big step-up and made some progress. Hope to be riding the first one properly within the next few weeks and there's a nice step-up/gap which seems possible as long as I can be brave and stay off the brakes!
I remember BITD when I was at collage I thought I would show off on my Cannondale Super V. So I climbed onto the loading bay round the back of the engineering area with the idea of dropping off it. The 'dale has a crappy plastic sram rear mech, when I landed the 4ft drop to flat (with 10-15 people watching) the mech just shattered. For a second or two all those people thought I was properly RAD. I didn't look so cool having to push my bike to the train station. Bloody crappy sram mechs.
Haha......RAD man!

made my first visit to sherwood pines yesterday.this bit of northshore type thingy looks like nothing from this angle, but on the first run through it looked like i was dropping off the end of the world 😳
I love jumps and drops, they're so much fun! I'm fine basically everything tbh but I'll just keep doing bigger and bigger stuff. I've done 8ft drops, decent dirt jump lines and pretty big doubles and I'm about equal on all of them now. I'm really getting used to whipping it out and tables now. Styling it up adds another new element of fun. 😀
Nice one, ton! 🙂
I don't get what that last drop is supposed to be. Your hardly going to launch it to flat but then why is it even there if all you can do is roll it.
I would 😀I don't get what that last drop is supposed to be. Your hardly going to launch it to flat but then why is it even there if all you can do is roll it.
Nope, im as mince as they come. Sometimes i really piss myself off. I know its a mind game and i should just get with the program but there is a mental block when it comes to steep dropoffs. 🙁

you can go over it any way you choose, can`t you?
I'm shit and I wish I was better. many many years ago (well ten or so) I was capable of a 3 or 4 foot drop to flat (off an old railway platform) but now I'm rubbish at drops, and anything that involves me launching upwards would have my heart going arrythymic faster than yours, Ton. Would love to learn but not sure I have the bottle
I can't do em! Well can do tiny ones, not bothered about doing any I'm not comfotable with, quite happy going round the side of those at Temple Newsam. I did do the first one once and nearly went over the bars (I know I'm crap) not bothered since.
Glad to here you're out riding again Ton 🙂
the feeling i had first time i cleared the big ladder drop at GT was incredible but nobody was watching so up i went again this time with a few people waiting as i approached the run in my front wheel washed out and down i went
Ton, Steve, we'll have to meet up for a TP mince.
We'd be awesome
😉
just wondering if it`s an age thing? i know for a fact that i was awesome 45+ years ago on my 3 speed sturmey archer geared half ton cast iron flying bedstead 😉
nowadays i dont want to break records, certainly dont want to break bones and only break sweat if it`s unavoidable!
I'm free in the mornin, feeling awesome already.....
PS lowcogger - I love breaking sweat - but not at all keen on breaking bones, hence the mincearoonies 😀
yes and yes, but not anywhere near as big as i used to, im old and frail these days 😆
all depends on how much i psych myself out to begin with... if its on the track and i dont have time to over-think it i'm generally ok and will pump off them, if i have too much time to panic myself then i'll stop myself and go round them or roll them. all in the head!
ton and steve - where are these drops? is it in the woods to the right of the Ave? comes out near a brick bridge?
Steve and Chip, up for a ride anytime you want, but unable to ride tomorrow.
at Jimmy's at 9am for my bloods sorting.
and the ride will have to be a pootle mind..... 8)
Rob, if you ride/drive in from the lights on the selby road, you come thru the main gates with the football field on your right. park there and ride along the edge of the field/trees and they are at the end of the trees on your right.
nice little dh run to play about on for a hour or so.
if you fancy a pootle from rothwell, we could meet steve and chip and have a ride up there.
silly me, i know where u mean. the log ones!
yer i'm always up for a ride with people! normally get fri and sat off work, but have got things on for the next few weekends. if u post up on BB mbc (or get steve to) i'll see it 😀
PS lowcogger - I love breaking sweat - but not at all keen on breaking bones, hence the mincearoonies
i was only joking about that bit, i break sweat quite freely 😀
Steve's pic above looks like an unofficial bit of Follow Your Dad at Cannock 😀
Ton, Rob and Chip. I'll post up a sat ride in a few weeks on BB and here for a nice pootle from Rothewll (we can meet you at Country park) over to Tempy and do some loops in the woods (I may miss the bit out where I broke my ribs though), jumps are optional I hope....
good good steve, sat 28th is my next free one, if thats alright with others.
I had a bit of an epiphany a couple of weeks ago after crashing fairly hard and rolling into a tree. The best bit of advice ive been given is "spot your landing", this really stops me stiffening up in the air (though i do get a twitch if its a nice jump 😉 ). Now jumps and drops are a big part of my ride and i am bleeding loving 'em! Want to get higher n start whipping. Big AIR!
all depends on how much i psych myself out to begin with... if its on the track and i dont have time to over-think it i'm generally ok
that`s just how i was at cannock last week (first visit, certainly not the last)
Sorry Rob I'm in Peterborough 28th, nowt to stop you lads going though. I should be ok week before if anyone else up for it?
Sat 21st, I'll post it up. I was in Tempy Friday, it's riding really fast at the moment, still the odd slurpy bit in woods around golf course to make it interesting though 😀
steve, 21st is fine for me mate. 8)
ton - glad that you have sorted your jumps out and apologies for not saying so in first post. I was (am) still nursing my wounds and stiffness from failing to do likewise on Friday at the time of posting 🙁 Even looked at the armour thread (and wiggle) this morning!! But that would be a little silly ex-DH.
OOI - did you have a lid on when jumping (as I assume that it was you enjoy the wind in your hair the other day!!) 😉 ??
lidded and kneepadded. 😀
I won't manage a ride on Monday, I'm well goosed!
We'll get out one day, though. It WILL be awesome.
Launched off the fun box at gt freeride recently and enjoyed that, nice sculpted landing though!
Have gone over the middle drop off higher up the hill but didn't quite life my front enough the second time and nearly went otb.. Scared myself rotten. Never had the guts to do it again though!
Did Caddon bank at Inners after a few years away, did the third (big) drop at the top and was shaking afterwards when I stopped and turned to look at it.
Deffo getting less hung-ho than I was 5 or 10 years ago.. Maybe marriage, family and mortgage have calmed me down a bit.
Used to just ride over/off things without too much thought, tend to stop and size up stuff these days before deciding (not) to ride it full pelt!
just been out to another local dh/jump spot (middleton woods or beruit, depending on your mettle).
one of the dh runs has 2 nice 2 ft drops which i checked out on the push up.
made sure the landing are was clear, pushed up, and rode down the dh run, and nailed em both 8)
someone gave me a tip about spotting the landing, and it bloody works too, makes the whole thing a lot smoother.
miggy wood is good fun not been there in a while, dont like goin in the dark 😉
ps ton have you still got that hardrock for sale?
Scamper -
Steve's pic above looks like an unofficial bit of Follow Your Dad at Cannock
I spotted that too, coming from the side and landing on a fire road... not adviseable with all the traffic it gets!
21st I'm off work. It's a date.
Nice one Chip, I'll wait till end of week before posting it up on here and BB, take it you'll park at mine Chip? We could meet ton at Roth CP (or will you be driving to Tempy Tony?) Might even get anotherstan along to demonstrate the flying dismount.
country park is good Steve.
i will have to either spin or walk the climbs tho.
Just been out to a local jump spot and managed to clear the three tables, they are only small but I was happy with myself. I then popped down to the other local jump spot that is bloody amazing there are so many lines. I will be trying hard not to hurt myself there in the next couple of weeks.
Mondays ride in the wet put the brakes (literally) on my re-emerging confidence, some serious mincing took place 😳 still nice to be back on bike though. Got a busy weekend now as our Ben gets married Saturday, so will post up the Tempy jump fest on Monday.
Yes, I'll park & ride up with you, Steve.
Walking uphill, talking bo!!ox suits me fine, ton.
Was going to start another thread for a ride on Sat but hopefully anyone interested will see it on here.
Sat 21st April Ride to Temple Newsam for a session of all the good stuff and to watch ton nailing all those jumps 😀
I will be setting off from Mickletown Community Centre, Methley LS26 9JE at 8.30 am. plenty of parking available. Will meet ton (and anyone else) at Rothwell Country park (suggest bottom of road under railway bridge just before canal) at 9.00 am approx.
If anyone fancies meeting us at Temple Newsam we should be at the little DH course around about 9.30 - 10.00 am and will spend a bit of time there.
Post up if these times don't suit and we'll settle on whats best for us all.
Steve.
This is about the biggest I've done....maybe 10 - 12ft from top to landing....although must say riding a bike with 8" of travel meant there was a lot less to worry about....but still scared the crap out of me and took about 10 mins to get the minerals to try it.
steve and chip, you are gonna think i am a right pillock, but i got my weekends mixed up.
i have to work on saturday morning.
hope you see this fella's, and sorry to let you down.
steve- i might be out, if my new bike comes and i can sort some pedals in time. but don't wait for me, because i'm only a maybe
I always try to imagine oneself as i stand at the lip of the drop or jump, shut my eyes and feel the take off underneath me and have that picture in my head.it works for me,although im only at the 1-2ft drop stage at the moment.
i do find them very frightening and dangerous!
I can, a bit, but I've got a bit of psychology... Roll in, looking good... BANG ON THE BRAKES! But not in time, so you still end up having to do the drop but at about 1mph. Magic. Bloody brain.
A weekend with bob campbell coaching and I can now 😀
I had so many bad habits, like speed bunny hopping rather than manual bunny hopping. Never been able to jump properly/ consistently but could clear decent sized doubles by the end of the coaching. Recommend it to anyone.
No worrys Tony, we'll still have a ride and arrange another when you are free. rob I'll post details up on BB, just turn up if you can.
Done the high one at GT, getting the run in right is the hardest part. Want to try the one at Stainburn half way up the Norewood side but that run in looks even worse!
One from the weekend:
you cant beat old blokes having fun....... 8)
I wore SPDs for 15 years and stayed firmly planted on the ground, changed to flats and I've got soooo much better since then.
