There is a disused railway between Hawes and Garsdale, and proposals have been submitted to turn it into a six-mile, multi-user path.
This is a good idea - if you want to link the fleshpots of Hawes with the Pennine Bridleway at Garsdale, or head towards Hawes with the idea of getting the Settle-Carlisle train back, you can't avoid the A684, which is a motorbike racetrack most weekends during the summer and definitely unpleasant to ride.
Some holdouts on the council are still hoping for an actual railway to be reinstated on the line, which seems slightly unrealistic.

Consultation is here if you're interested.
Form completed, I read about this yesterday and had hoped it would also include the stretch out to Aysgarth
Done, it's a brilliant proposal and the "potential railway line" is nothing more than a smoke screen for "ger orf o mi laaaand" (that I didn't buy, rather I just took it when they got rid of the rail line)
I’ve completed it in favour of the multi use. I think the reinstatement of a railway line there is completely unrealistic. Stage 1 cycles in Hawes brought it to my attention and they are active the community especially for kids
Done. We have miles of old railway in Co Durham given over to multi-user access and I see the benefits of that on a daily basis for a wide variety of people. Ultimately I think the multi-user path would benefit more people than reinstating the railway.
Done thanks for the link
Stage 1 cycles in Hawes
Great little cafe. Thanks to everyone who filled it in.
I think the reinstatement of a railway line there is completely unrealistic.
They're trying to reopen Colne to Skipton down my way, and I think that will struggle to happen, despite having a decent business case. Linking some remote spot halfway up the Carlisle-Settle to Northallerton seems more fanciful.
Supportive comments (reported in the Craven Herald) from Mary Towneley's daughter Cosima.
Survey completed. It would be good to see this created.
completed.
justmakes sense to get people away from the road. it is a terrible section of road to be on from Hawes up to the Garsdale turn for the coal road.
Done
The A684 is an awful road to bike on in summer and I can't see that railway line ever getting relaid to Garsdale given the speed that they are progressing to Asygarth at the east end. I'm not sure it would be viable even if they did get it reopened - Northallerton to Garsdale would need a lot of volunteers to operate and maintain.
