I have a HT i am mainly using for the road but can't afford to buy a specific road/cyclo cross bike. Will 29er wheels with skinny road tyres fit onto a 26" frame and forks? Also will compact road cranks fit without any gear problems/issues for better gearing on the road?

Anyone done this or had any experience of attempting to do this?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

The chainset will need a road specific flat bar shifter. It pulls a different amount of cable than an MTB shifter. You may also have a problem with the big ring fouling the chainstay. I can't say for definite if the wheels will fit but I suspect not.

Cant really see the point of changing the wheels, why not just get some decent 26" road tyres like Kojaks or similar.

Fit a road cassette 11-25, you are good to go.

Wheels with <28mm tyres most likely will fit, crankset most likely won't. Because of both the chainring and crank arms hitting the chainstay. If you are talking square taper then you can use a longer BB to give you clearance but you may end up with excessive Q factor.

The chainset will need a road specific flat bar shifter. It pulls a different amount of cable than an MTB shifter.

Only if you are wanting to use a road front mech as well. Which would be ideal (shape of the cage will suit the profile of the rings and result in better shifting and less rub) but not essential. That said, if you need to get the cranks out to clear the chainstays then most likely a road front derailleur won't have enough throw to shift to the big ring. Leave your existing shifter and derailleur for the mean time and see how it works.

700c wheels and proper road tyres roll much faster.

I'd say stick with 26" and decent tires, the difference to 700c does not justify the expense IMO/E.

Fitting a road chainset can be an expensive nightmare also, can you fit a bigger chainring only?

I was originally going to change the chainrings but then saw a tiagra chainset at merlin for £35 and thought 'hmmmm i wonder'

I have 1" specialized pro tyres on at present, they are very good and do the job well. Again thought i would ask about the larger wheels hoping they would fit for better rolling

New chainrings/chainset it is then by the looks of it

I was thinking about doing it, I decided against it and just bought a spare set of wheels with schwable marathon plus tyres and a set of white bros rock solid carbon forks, it's definitely no where near as spritely as a road bike but it's pretty damn swift for a mtb.
