So want to add gears back onto one of my bikes. Bike already has shifters (drop bar brakes) and know I have a 11s 11-42 cassette, 10s XT clutch mech and 11s chain somewhere in the parts bin(s). Found the road to mtb tanpan which I thought was going to be a devil to find but for the life of me can't find the cassette, mech and chain!
Been through the 4 boxes in the garage and they must be somewhere else, but literally no idea where!
Started pricing up parts and quickly hit £150, so much for the "free" mod I wanted to do!
Rant over.
I found the 10 speed chain I bought two years ago.
Does that count?
I reduced mine a bit because I was fed up of not being able to find things I was sure I had; it's way more satisfying to know that I now need a bit that I threw out for no good reason. OTOH I still have a basically infinite number of X9 left shifters.
Mmm. Mostly. Despite my garage being absolute disorganised chaos, and despite building up 5 bikes in the last 2.5 years, and having several Tesco crates / Wilko stacking boxes of unused parts relating to each build, I usually know where stuff is.
I’m usually pretty good remembering what I’ve got in the spares box. But I was surprised to find a large number of Thomson seatposts yesterday.
Also a Hope HID light complete with two dead endurance battery packs and stem mounts, but no matching stem.
Time for another clear out.
I bought an eleven spd chain in a sale before covid and found two more brand new ones when I put it away.
I hope so, I'm hoping to find a 10 spd rear mech tomorrow!
Not meaning to brag, but some have larger parts(bins) than others.
Seeing as my parts bin is spread around two different places 40 miles apart plus a storage unit then no, not really! I'm always at the wrong one for what I'm looking for.
Yes, I can always find the things in my parts bin as my parts bin is very small consisting of a few pairs of handlebars and single speed cogs. Any parts that are no longer used but good enough to sell get sold.
couldn't find any olives or inserts and was certain should have some as it's the type of thing that if I need 2 will buy 4 so have spares and have a box labelled "brakes"...anyway ended up heading out to buy some more...got out the bleed kit and yes logically I'd put the spare olives and inserts in there...dilemma now is will I remember next time?
Parts bin bingo. I usually have some 6 bolt to centre lock adaptors knocking about. I can't for the life of me find the buggers.
So, had a thought and found that parts... bolted to my wife's bike!
Durrrrrrrrrr
A couple of years ago she managed to mangle a rear mech and I swapped my old 11s kit onto her bike as an updgrade/fix and then promptly forgot about it as she's barely ridden the bike since! Now need to decide on whether to strip the parts off her bike or whether it's now ok to buy a GRX rear mech...
I had a cull a while back of 9 speed bits apart form an old XT mech that would work on a 10s CX/gravel bike if needed. I was never going to use them otherwise.
I have a whole drawer packed so full of brake disks it can't close. Yet somehow I've never got a matching 180/200 set that fits.
The current "how in the blinking Jeffries have I accumulated this many" though, is handlebars. I like bars with a fair amount of sweep, and moderately wide, but that doesn't really explain the entire plastic crate of spares I've accumulated?
Usually I can find what I'm after, but I'll often buy something then realise I had one "in stock" anyway.
And yesterday I checked everywhere in the workshop but could only find one flipping pedal washer.
Yes, because i know exactly where everything is....
It's parts binS not bin. I have a Really Useful box for each part of the bike. Just don't ask to see the stem collection (yes I do bike fitting for fun).
I mostly don't bother looking any more. My parts bin is just somewhere to store the extra bits I buy when I order online - let's face it, if I need something, I probably should probably a spare for emergencies, so I might as well buy two of everything. Unless it's an emergency, it's easier to just buy something online than go digging through a shedful of spare parts, so I usually don't bother looking.
