As the title really, just had an error code flash up that googling suggests might be a death blow to the ep8 fitted to the Marin I picked up second hand.
always knew it was a risk, working on worst case at the moment as having an absolute hoot on it at the moment.
not bothered by weight so the ep6 seems like a good option.
I’m sure you could take it to a bike shop who deal with shimano motors and get them to order and replace it but I don’t think any motor brand actually sells them on there own.
Standard impatience and wanting answers now lol
first step would be the shop diagnostic but having spannered and built bikes for 20+ years the thought of someone charging me a fortune to screw up 6 bolts and plug 4 connectors in on top of the anticipated price makes me a bit sad inside.
Some repairs can be done by specialists to the motior unit. Dunno if that is one of them tho

It's not quite that simple; the Shimano motor has model specific firmware settings including motor angle that effect the torque sensor. At least you'll get a warranty with the new motor if it's dealer fitted.
That is a fair point, putting me almost in the situation of having a ‘new’ bike. Hadn’t thought of it that way.
Not had cause to use them yet but I'll most likely send mine to this bloke when it chunks out of warranty
Looking on the posts by the company on Facebook the new Shimano motors use a new battery type making them incompatible with the previous generation. Which of course they wouldn't be! 🤣
If it's the torque sensor, I think it's new motor time, and the only option is to get it from a dealer, it's about 1k and there is also a long wait. Just took me 2 months to get a new motor, thankfully under warranty.
If you have the original receipt, you may get something under warranty anyway. The shop will just need to see proof of purchase.
You can only get a replacement for whats in there too, no option to upgrade or anything.
There are some on ebay, but they won't be setup or have any warranty (and they'll still be a large chunk of cash)
Lesson I've learnt.
Stay away from Shimano and giant branded Yamaha motors.
If they die that's it.
