and if so do you need to use the special connector pins, or can you use the existing rivets (like I always used to)

Assuming using the connector pins, I'd end up with 3 in the chain - does that matter?

alternatively - 2 sram style connector links

you have to use a new pin.

3 pins isn't a problem.

2 SRAM ones are fine but they get a bit pricey as you can't reuse them.

2 KMC connectors with a single inner link beteen them ?

I've used a 9-speed SRAM quicklink in a 10 speed chain as a get me home measure. It worked fine for about three rides until I got my backside in gear and bought some proper 10spd links, with no noticeable draw backs.
