So I've indulged myself and built up a SSCX bike. It was its maiden voyage today, it seems theres more work to be done.
I'm using a 42t chainring and an 18t freewheel. It's way too big though gear wise. I had to get off and carry way more than Id like. I was wondering if I might garner the opinion of folk who have been there and done it.

It's a dedicated cross bike so I'm not looking for a commuting/off road gear set up. Just wanted that sweet spot for off road riding.

I can't seem to find any track rings any smaller than 42t.

Your advice greatly appreciated 🙂

i run a 38x18 on the SSCX round the South Downs, you can give anything reasonable a good go and it's not too spinny anywhere else

(goes to look)

it's a Thorn ring, the chainset you're using will dictate choice somewhat

I run a 32-15 as my offroad gear, I can make it around everything on the other singlespeed gear of 34-13 but its pretty steep. Both are find offroad on flats, the second pretty steep on hills but good on the road as well. Loughborough area, not flat but not the hilliest that's for sure.

Do use a tensioner?

What sort of going do your local CX events use. That will govern the gearing surely.
Anyway, what chainset BCD have you?

why? if you're going to change the gearing of your SS to suit a course you're probably better off buying a geared bike eh? 😉

I race a Surly Crosscheck (with a carbon fork) with a 48T chainring and 20T freewheel - think this is about 65 gear inches. Is 63.5 not meant to be the ideal ratio?

I'd have a much smaller ring and freewheel but I ride that bike to work on a 48:16 fixed setup so all I need to do is spray the mud off, change the wheel and don't have to bother with the chain.

BCD is your problem when trying to get a smaller chainring, you might need to change cranks.

That's a fairly meaty gear I've got, but to be honest there were only two or three spots on the courses I rode last season (in Scotland) where I was running when most others were riding, and I did alright. On flatter courses it was fantastic.

I use a tensioner and my wheels have track hubs so I don't bother with pit wheels - when I'm organised enough I take a spare bike along.

39-18 here. Std road chainset + inner ring and an old screw-on FW. Can't get up every hill on it but that's partly the point )

I'm soft; current SS CX (or sort of CX) is 34:15 IIRC, this with standard 34t chainring from a duble chainset and 15t cog at rear, it's a Peregrine -- quite hefty but gets me up most things, can get a bit spinny though.

@2orangey4crows - it's a Revelate - Viscacha - really good multi-size bag, rolls up neat or extends quite a bit...

I've recently bought an All City Nature boy sscx bike but haven't ridden off road yet.
Interesting to read all your gear ratio set ups. Currently using for commuting on 42 x 17 and I'll need to get a 36 or 38 chain ring. I'm based in flat East London.
For those who need chain rings I found some in All City website http://allcitycycles.com/products/cross
