You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all.
Recently started riding again after a 7-8 year break which involved dusting off my old Kona Stuff. After really enjoying myself for a few months I decided to upgrade the stock V brakes for something more inclined to actually stop me, and put on a set of new Deores.
All was working fine until today, when nearly home from a ride I suddenly lost braking power at the front. Closer inspection shows that the lower IS mount on my forks has sheared off, and the calliper can pivot away from the fork leg. Photographic evidence here. The part that sheared off was stuck on the bolt, so I'm still in possession of it.
Is this something that can be fixed with a weld, or are the stresses involved likely to be too great? I imagine it would play silly buggers with the alignment of the calliper too?
Hoping the answer is that it can be sorted fairly economically, as due to a big move later in the year I don't really have the funds to fund some new forks. Thanks in advance for any help!
The lower legs are generally made of cast magnesium so can't be welded, new or secondhand forks time I'm afraid, or if your skint a v brake..
Sorry.. 😥
Id say it could be welded but alloy welding isnt cheap, the plus side being it really isnt big or complicated .
Id start by asking at the local motorcycle shop if they know anyone who would have a look ??
Usually a source of good contacts for oddball little jobs like this.
Thanks for the thoughts, will see if I can find someone local to take a look.
Looks like my second thread might follow a "what 2nd hand forks" theme. Sad times.
Get a good set of replacement Bombers - cant happen again ... 😳
