I can't afford to be spending a fortune on a Chris King or hope but I'd like something nice, anyone any ideas or experiences?

Cheers

as long as it's got reasonably sealed bearings and you're switched on enough to pull it apart every year or so to clean and re-grease it...anything will do TBH

FSA Orbit XL II

Will likely outlive the frame.

Personally, I'd go for the old tried and trusted FSA Orbit-II. Cheap, last for ages. (Like he said ^^ )

You could just but a Hope lower headset and continue using your upper. Most times it's the lower only that's trashed.

Having tried countless headsets of all different varieties and standards the one thing that has made the difference between good and crap is "does it have a crown race seal".

It tends to be the more expensive ones that do which is odd since its such a simple, cheap and obvious thing to include.

Relying purely on the bearing seals makes for a short lifespan in the UK no matter how expensive the headset....they are just not designed for the job of being fully immersed in water

Hope are one company that do this on all their headsets - cane creek are another - usually on their top to middle range headsets.

There must be others out there but in my opinion that is the feature to look for. They are basically fit and forget

Not a cane creek 40....

Any particular reason why, they seem very well reviewed?

the best/longest lasting/robust headsets I've use recently are cheap Neco ones from china on ebay. £9 delivered and they are brilliant.

I've had 2 cane creak 40's. both bottom bearings have been trashed sharpish, as said above, there is no seal to keep shit out of the lower, and it's not a universal size bearing, so you end up having to buy CC's own, which is about the price of a pint off the cost of a new headset.

I have a Cane Creek S3, I've just replaced the bearings after 6 years of commuter use. In fact, it's pretty much the last thing to be replaced including the cranks (Middleburn) which snapped a couple of weeks ago. The bearings cost £15 and were very easy to find. So I'm recommending that! 🙂

Fsa orbit xl2 or orbit extreme pro for ultimate durability. Hope are good too. Had a cane creek 40 and that died very quickly. Annoyingly I couldn't get better quality bearings for it so had to buy proprietary cane creek bearings again.

I reckon at any price point, Fsa orbits are hard to look past.

Had a look at the Cane Creek website and it looks like the 40 series don't have the crown race seal....so that just leaves Hope and Cane Creek 110 headsets that I know of. Both of which will outlive any frame.

I believe the 110 headsets have a 110 year warranty...they are phenomenally good, best Iv ever seen in terms of quality...but also phenomenally expensive....I tend to buy just the bottom cup as most cheaper headsets seem to provide adequate sealing for the top cup....strangely.

Hope would be just as good though and a good bit cheaper

FWIW I have a CC40 on my Fatbike that now needs replaced. Mind you, it's 5 years old and has been ridden in some pretty challenging conditions.
