Old school mountain biker here with a 2010 Orange Crush and a 2x9 setup. I'm from the days when wheels were 26" and steerers were straight.
I am interested in going to 1x12, probably NX Eagle. Basically, will it work? I've searched for a while now but find conflicting/unclear info.
I realise a 12 speed's biggest cog will almost be the same size as my 26" wheel, so it may be a bit daft, in which case a 1x11 would be fine.
(I plan an moving my 2x9 setup over to a bike build for my daughter so am therefore 'justifying' a this upgrade for 1x12 or 1x11!)
If you go with NX (Or SX) eagle, you’ll be fine.
Ah. A simple answer. Thanks tomhoward
I'm planning similar with my 2007 26er, but have put in on hold for a few months as struggling to find much stock of new Shimano Deore. You're all good I think as long as you stick with stuff that fits the Shimano HG freehub body/non-boost.
What model of rear hub do you have? If it’s a hope pro 2 or the right model of dt Swiss, for example, you could fit an xd or microspline freehub. (The hope would need the entire hub guts swapped, so it may not be convenient, but it is possible)
Its a Shimano FH-M475
Its a Shimano FH-M475
So you'll be sticking with the HG freehub body I guess. I'm doing the same, just means you can't get the 10T top gear, and go a bit bigger at the front maybe?
It’s. or so much the gear range I’d be looking for from a microspline freehub, more that the new deore stuff is supposed to shift extremely well and the cassettes are well priced (If heavier than a small moon)
I recently went 1x9 with a hanger extender and microshift cassette. It's great!
If swapping out wholesale, check out some of the German sites for shifter/mech/cassette/chain combo deals. SLX for about £180 iirc.
NX Eagle for 12 speed might be your best option to fit an 11/50 cassette. Or if you’re on a 26er you might not need quite the same range - unless you’re doing steep uphill stuff as well as road sections between bridleways could go 11 speed 11-46 with a Sunrace cassette and then use either Sram GX 11 speed or Shimano Deore m5100 11 speed mech and shifter. I’ve just done the Deore m5100 and that Sunrace cassette (SLX shifter as it was the cheapest option in stock) for my nephew on a Shimano QR 9mm rear hub.
Just gone 3 x 10 to 1 x 11 on a build frame swop. I bought an XT 11 speed Dynasis 2 shifter and an XT 11 to 46 cassette. I had to buy a new chain as was too short and needed every one of the 114 links. The 10 sp xt mech ( dynansis 1) , I had to get a mech extender ( £6 or so) as it wouldnt clear the 46t sprocket. If you have smaller sprocket it may clear.
The freehub was a 10 speed DT 350 and caused issues in not being deep enough for the cassette lock ring to do up enough to worry about stripping the threads, but I had a DT swiss 11 speed freehub on a road bike , reduced to 10 speed, so they swopped over easy enough. Other than that it works flawlessly.
If it was me..just stick 11sp Shimano on.
11-42 or even 11-46 and put the extra cash to a wide range 9sp cassette for your daughter.
+1
11 is easier to set up, and you arguably don't need super big sprockets with 26er wheels.
I have just gone 1 x 12 nx on my Orange 5 (2010) with a RaceFace 34 chain ring
I went eBay for the bits and to be honest I’m as happy as Larry
It simplifies everything and has given me space on the left hand side of the bars for a dropper lever
Did I need it...... I suppose not
It does make me feel a little up to date with my 26’r
