Hi all, i'm in the process of modernising my 2012 era On one Scandal (Swap drop out 29er version), I've already gone tubeless and have a few bits on order to go 1x9 on the drive train. I have been thinking about swapping out the current Smoothie mixer headset to one of Superstar components Slackerizer ones to take 2 deg off of the quite steep 72 deg head angle.
So first question, Is this even possible, will it take one?
Second question if the above is "Yes", is this worth doing or will it completely screw the handling?
Third question, How do i know which one to order? Headsets appear to not be as simple as they used to be!
Oh, and fork is a 1 1/8" straight steerer.
Thanks.
I've gone from 67 to ,65 on my orange clockwork.
It has a tapered head tube and straight steerer fork.
So should you- yes. Can you???
I had a faster response on here than from works as to which headset to fit.
What size is the headtube? I think it needs to be at least 44mm straight
72 to 70 will still be.... twitch AF. Not sure it's worth it tbh
Do it.
The only danger is that you'll then want to go to 68° (and then 66*) so the whole experiment may well set you on course for a whole new bike 😉
How is the bike built/what's the intended use/what fork do you have - rigid or sus and if sus what travel?
Reason I ask is that era scandal has a lovely 'quick' handling persona, and it might be a shame to dilute that. If the bike was being used for predominantly fast blasts around woods then I'd be inclined to keep it as-is. At the other extreme if it was being used for lakeland tech descents... I'd think about a new bike before a slackset 😉
Depending on stock, Superstar will almost certainly have one to fit. A T2 or T5 would fit depending on what you want to do with the lower cup.
Thanks for the replies, i've just been out in the garage investigating the headtube size, it's tapered, not straight, i did find this old post from here via Google,
https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/on-one-scandal-headset-question-1/
I'm not sure if that poster got mixed up, SS do a EC44/ZS49 but not the other way round. Either way the cups are well stuck in, despite my liberal use of coppaslip when installing so it might be a bike shop job anyway.
The bike is only used for local woodland singletrack and occasional low level XC races, me and tech descents don't get on well! It's currently fitted with a 100mm RS Reba fork.
the top cup on a slackerizer headset has to go external to accomodate the angle the steerer ends up at
My on one slackset thread/question
Good question - i've asked about the same thing and still keen to do it, but still just can't get my head around which slackset I actually need.
My forks tapered, rather than 1 1/8, but never quite figured out the cups bit of it.
Thanks @jimfrandisco your thread answers the which headset from SS.
Going to have to wait a little while now as i just ordered new bars and seat post, hopefully a Black Friday deal will come up soon.
<blockquotestill just can’t get my head around which slackset I actually need.
@markwsf has the answer.
Bit of a thread hijack but does anyone know what size headset the On One Maccatuskil takes? Ec44, ZS 49 or 56?
I asked planet X but they predictably haven't replied.
That's what I assumed Bazz, but when I took a look at my frame, something didn't quite add up.
Need to look into it again properly.
Can't speak for that exact frame but I've done it in at least 5 different bikes and never regretted it for a second on any of them. It did make my C456 a less good climber but it was totally worth the tradeoff and tbh it' just made it from "ok I guess climber" to "slightly less good but still ok I guess climber". With my Hemlock and Remedy it was transformative, and the whole reason I kept riding those bikes for years after I'd have otherwise replaced them.
I suppose with something like a Scandal I might be a little more worried about maybe spoiling the things it's best at. I mean, I did the "longer fork in a 26er Scandal" thing based on people's recommendations and tbf it sucked donkey balls, yeah it was slacker and had more fork but it handled like it was pissed, you couldn't really make use of any of the "advantages" and it took a lot away from what it was actually good at.
Good memory Bazz.
I did fit one to my Scandal, and yes it worked and made a difference. Quite subtle, which at first I was disappointed by but now I realise is a good thing as it still rides and handles like this generation scandal should - nicely lively. It won’t turn it into a slack, burly trail bike (you’d need the latest generation Scandal for that - which I also own and the two bikes complement each other nicely)
The one I bought was a T2-2 EC44/ZS49 100-110mm Straight Steerer. The frame has a tapered head tube and the fork is a straight 1 1/8”. It took a bit of checking back and forth to figure out exactly which one to buy.
As commented earlier in the thread this uses an external cup at the top, as it needs to make a bit more space to allow for the angle. The bottom stays internal so it not entirely intuitive what is needed when basing it off a standard headset setup.
Thanks @markwsf nice to hear from someone who has actually done this, on the bike i'm planning on doing it on.
