Hello,
Is it possible to put a hub with hub gears, such as an Alfine, on to a frame designed as an SS/fixie frame? If it has slidy dropouts then I assume I won't need the mech hanger to fit a tensioner to, anything else I should be aware of?
I have never had a slidy dropout frame or hub gears before, my SS has the tensioner where the mech would usually go so this may be a bit of noob question...
Cheers guys and girls.
Long as its the same over lock nut diameter as the hub
Ie alfine needs a 135 frame
if its a narrow frame 120mm or so you could try an old sturmey archer hub as they were narrower, possibly with spacers/washers if too narrow!
Thanks guys.
What I'm actually trying to do is build a winter road bike. I would like hub gears (probably Alfine 8 ) but don't want to spend £lots on a bike and then have to chuck away an expensive wheel and drivetrain. Cheap fixies can be had for a £little and I was wondering if that was the way to go, road bikes without STIs are far cheaper than those with, just a case then of swapping a rear wheel over.
Is 120mm the standard width for a track bike or something Gazc? I had no idea bikes were made that narrow.
The Sachs 7sp hub can be had for cheap but this has a coaster brake, don't know if I want one on those for fastish (20-23mph average) club runs. Anyone got/tried one?
You need this page: http://sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html
I guess you don't need to use the coaster brake if you have a rear brake too. Would be a back up in the rain I guess. But I guess you could look into disabling it.
