...the damper return spring in my 6 month old Rockshox SID RLs no longer works? I thought a cable on my Spark had snapped as the damper didnt open when using the twinlock. But on closer inspection I found there was no spring resistance when turning the cap on top of the damper. I was hoping to tape the cap in the middle position and carry on using the bike until the shop requests the fork back for warranty work. But I don't want to damage any internals that a loose spring could cause.

Probably depends what is wrong. Unhooking the spring is a pretty standard mod to turn a remote fork a non-remote one and that doesn't do any harm. If something has broken off then that is a different matter. You don't want to be bouncing them up and down with loose bit of metal in there. Not familiar with those forks exactly but usually the whole mechanism unscrews pretty easily and comes out as a unit. You could give it a quick look.
