I need some nice and cosy padded bib tights for winter.

What do we recommend?

Last winter I mainly wore a set of Rivelo thermal tights from Sportspursuit.

Currently wearing 3/4 Castelli jobbies which seem to bead the rain off really well.

Castelli Sorpassos or Pactimo.

Got some DHB Aerons last winter, still very happy with them

To be awkward, I don’t really bother with padded tights any more, I never fond any as comfortable as shorts.
So it’s either non-padded bib tights over my bib shorts or bib shorts and leg warmers

Same as kilo. Currently Castelli Nanoflex.

I agree with Kilo's approach, but haven't been able to find any decent non-padded bib tights.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I used to use Lusso Max Repel (pad-less) over my bibs of choice. I’ve recently started using Galibier padded Mistral membrane bibs and they are superb in crap weather.

Altura do some nice full length 'warm' bibs, unpadded.

In the depths of winter I'll wear a nice comfy pair of padded MTB liner shorts, with the Altura unpadded bibs over the top, works well.

Need to be padded, I can't wear shorts underneath.

Massively more comfortable for me for various reasons.

I'm in the same camp. No padding on bib longs, but padded shorts underneath.

Managed to buy myself some 2nd hand Raphas (Deep Winter or something like that) last year before it got cold. Happy with them. Double happy as I wasn't paying full price, probably about 30% of it.
Their actual prices are frankly obscene...

Planet X winter, unpadded biblongs kept me fine before that.

You can't go wrong with them for the price.

Before that someone also suggested Lusso. That was my second choice.

Cheers!
I.

Padded liner, unpadded tights and if it a cold or wet, waterproof shorts to avoid a cold crotch

I do have some padded DHB 3/4 bibs for long winter rides that work well with long socks. Leg warmers if needed. I don’t currently own any bib tights come to think of it

Unpadded works well for commuting as well - I don’t bother with padded liner shorts as less than 10 miles, so normal boxers and same top layers. Less kit to wash

Castelli Sorpasso. Expensive, but worth it. Go one size up.

Hmm the Sorpasso look a bit pricey because they are top-end.

What about going down one to the Tutto Nano?

Probably only use them once a week and when it is really cold.

I wore the Tutto Nano 3/4 tights yesterday for 5 hours in the rain, was very impressed by the water beading, didn't feel at all wet. They're quite thin, so not sure how well they'd cope if it was really cold, although cycling your legs don't need that much insulation.

DHB Aeron from Wiggle have worked well for me for the past few years

Sportful Top Comfort is another really comfortable pair - bit warmer than Castelli Sorpassos too. I wore out my long Sorpassos after 10 years, but I still have a pair of 3/4s.

I used to wear lycra shorts under unpadded tights, but once I tried a decent padded tight I never went back - lycra traps moisture so you just end up with a clammy midriff, plus you have the extra restriction of two layers of fabric.

I assume we're on about on a road bike rather than MTB? My one pair are Morvelo Stormshield, not tested in rain yet but they're comfy as anything pad wise. I find they wriggle up a little in the leg but unless you've got jodper type under foot elastic I think this will naturally happen, just means people get a flash of socks!

I stopped wearing Assos when they brought out their Swiss Gimp range and lots of people have caught up in terms of quality without the eye-watering prices.

Decathlon (under their kiprun brand) do some excellent running tights and also some tapered running trousers that are half way between tights and joggers, both of which are great for cycling, worn over bibshorts.

The bonus is no cycling tax - they’re about £20 a pair.

Lol. Not sure which is the Gimp range. It can be rather form fitting.

If they're anything as good as the 3/4 and shorts I bought, Galibier. Great fit and pad, well made, free Merino socks in my order.

I picked up some Madison winter bib tights which were on sale at the time. Only £40 and one of the comfiest pads I've used. +1 for DHB, however mine are probably 6 years old now so no idea what the equivalent would be. Bloody warm though.

Padless, I use the planet X ones, they are a good cut and the right level of thickness.

After years of layering up I got some Galibier membrane bibs last winter and they were just the job for me.

I have an older pair of the Endura Pro SL. The wind proof panels make a huge difference in keeping my knees comfortable. Personally I hate knee warmers as I have yet to find any that actually stay in place on my legs.

Just got some Assos and they are quite nice - not worn them yet, they appear better quality than my Castelli, not as nice as my Rapha Classic shorts though.
