I serviced my front forks today (Fox Float 32mm Evolution 2013 model) and as I undid the compression adjustment knob:
This little washer jumped out:

I have no idea where it came from, and after reassembling everything seems normal but was wondering if anyone knew what this washer is for? Pretty concerned that the whole fork is going to self-destruct on my ride tomorrow!
I'd call that a circlip rather than a washer.
I've got that very knob on my forks, but it's a bit late to go fiddling the the garage now. Can look tomorrow

Not sure they go back to 2013 - but lots of exploded diagram/parts lists on the Fox site. Find your fork model, scroll down and click the image thumbnail to view the diagram

Nice one, thanks DezB. Not heard the term "circlip" before - still learning!
Yep, external circlip.
It will fit into a groove on a shaft. Usually to stop a component below it from coming off.
If scratches on that shaft would be detrimental, then I suggest refitting with circlip plyers (which come in external and internal types).
I think I've found it for ya.
My son's old CTD forks, bit rusty, but looks like the little clip, well here, I've marked it

Odd you dont remember taking it off in the first place. Requires circlip pliers to remove and fit. It shouldnt have just dropped out.
@DezB - thanks so much, you absolute legend! That's exactly the same as my fork.
The circlip is holding down a washer with the spring underneath it. I don't think it's a major issue it not being there temporarily because the spring/washer assembly is held down by the CTD adjust knob, however, I'll buy some circlip pliers and get it reassembled correctly just in case.
@dyna-ti Yeah I'm a bit concerned that it came out. I was using some brake cleaner and ear buds to clean out the gunk in there but that shouldn't have dislodged it. I'll compress it before refitting so it's a nice tight fit.
Looks like it’ll stop the damping adjustment rod from dropping through when the adjuster isn’t fitted.
Cool. Least you’ve got it - if I see something like that ping off, it always disappears somewhere on the garage floor!
