I've just managed to put together:
- "VG Sports" 11-50t 12 speed cassette
- KMC chain 12 speed
- "SNAIL" chainring spaced 3mm inboard on Shimano SLX double chainset
- Shimano SLX M7100 rear derailleur
- SRAM Eagle GX Shifter
And it all works (at the moment)! amazing.
Can anyone beat that??

It's basically a 11-36 10 speed with an extra 42 and 50t cogs.

ZEE mech with one up radr cage, clutch salvaged off an XT with hope jockeys.

XTR cable.

I thought I’d done ok - but didn’t resort to very random cassettes and chainrings.
Building a hardtail on a budget with 11 speed for my nephew:
‘New’ Deore 11 speed mech
‘Old’ Slx 11 speed shifter.
Sram chain
Suntour 11-46 cassette
Sram NX Eagle Dub cranks
Sram steel direct mount chainring.
At first I thought it was a stretch too far and couldn’t get it shifting right - but borrowed a tool to straighten the mech hanger and then it worked pretty decently!
I used to have:
VG Sport 11/52 12 speed cassette
Sunrace mech and Shifter.
KMC Chain
Superstar Chainring
Shimano FC-M751 octalink crankset and random fitting bottom bracket.
Was working a treat 🙂

With the Shimano mech, it actually shifts better than it did with the GX Eagle one, and the mech and cassette are half the price of GX Eagle 👍
Yeah the Shimano rear mechs feel solid compared to sram. Much better clutch and half the price!
It's odd, I love mismatched drivetrain components (especially as they are cheaper and work better) but I hate mismatched tyres. I must have same brand front and rear.
How are those cheap VG cassetes? I need a new 10 speed 11-42

Gotta love Shimano, I have a bike running an 8 speed mech from 1990’s (stx ? I think) with modernish 9s deore shifter and cassette. It’s on the same jockey wheels and shifts beautifully.
