Looking for wheelset recomendations.

I prefer campag equipment over Shimano, the one downside being the lack of choice when it comes to wheelsets.

I have a genesis equilibrium with campy groupset and looking for a suitable lighweight <1600gm wheelset with campy freehub, but not campy as i dont like the look of the spoke patterns.

yes, but not all their wheels have silly spoke lacing

Most of the big players* in wheels/hubs have a campag freehub option, so it shouldn't be hard to find something you like with the right freehub.

Whaty wheels have you looked at so far that you can't get with campag freehub?

Also, what's your budget and intended use? <-- That might have a big bearing on recommendations

I assume you absoultely must use Campag cassettes for personal reasons? If you're on 11 speed you can successfully mix and match between brands and it will shift OK as the 11 speed road spacing is so close between them it's almost irrelevant.

If you're running 11 speed you can use Shimano or SRAM 11 speed cassettes, as they're interchangeable.

OK, good point, i will try to explain better.

My Genesis is very retro looking, so i want a suitable wheelset that doesnt look like it came from the future, with new fangled flat spokes and deep rims etc.

Preferably chrome in colour, rim no deeper than 32mm, standard spoke pattern.

This rules out, Campag, Mavic, and most Fulcrums. I have looked at superstar wheels, but dont know what they are like (are they made of cheese?)

What that rules out is pretty much all current factory wheelsets, time to go custom, which means one of the decent online options or head to your local LBS/Wheel builder. You'll be able to get exactly what you want, with reliable easy to maintain components with no silly proprietary spokes, and built specifically for your needs as well, and possibly cheaper than some factory stuff depending what you go for.

superstar ...but dont know what they are like (are they made of cheese?)

The components are fine, build can be hit and miss, can be good, can be a bit below par.

Hubs* of your choice**, decent DB spokes (Sapim or DT) and H Plus Son TB14
(or Archetype if you want a little depth) would be a good retro looking option as well as robust and 'light enough'.

* You could even go for Campag hubs if you want, you can still get hold of them in traditional shape/drilling in nice polished silver at various levels to suit your budget.

** makes:

Also the bike is 10sp not 11
a non-issue as above pretty much all decent hubs are available with Campag freehub.

Novatec 171/271 are polished alloy hubs and with some H Son Archetype rims in silver finish should come under your weight limit.

@amedias

Thanks, useful info there. What online wheel builders would you recommend?

you can get campag spaced cassettes that are compatible with shimano freewheels.

This gives you more choice in wheels but you do then need to fork out for specific cassette

Where?

I think Miche do them too, and possibly IRD? IME though they're not as good (shifting or longevity) as either Campag or Shimano cassettes though.

If you're going for new wheels though you might as well just get hubs with the freehub you want and save yourself the headache.

What online wheel builders would you recommend?

Personally I can't recommend any as I build my own so have never used any to form an opinion, but Strada wheels, Just Riding Along, Spokesman (not an exhaustive list!) get good reviews on here and elsewhere, as do traditional builders like Paul Hewwitt, Mercian etc.

If you say where you are someone might be able to recommend someone local to you to go and pop in and have a chat, do you have a decent LBS?

If you want an inexpensive cartridge bearing based hub that's sensible weight look at the Novatec A171 F172, they're based on the old Campag body shape, are pretty reliable and take standard bearings so easy to look after/upgrade/maintain, and come with Shimano or Campag freehub options so you cna swap later if you need to as well.

There are other lighter Novatec options available in silver too but the ones above are the most 'retro Campag' looking hubs that aren't actually Campag hubs.

I put a wheel with a campaq ten speed cassette on my shimano ten speed bike it worked fine. Shouldn't and I'm not suggesting you buy wheels with a shimano hub just pointing out they may well work.

Record hubs, h plus son tb14 rims. Got 2 pairs. Best wheels out there. MINT. On carbon summer bike and steel retro thing. Look great on either.

And yes, CAMPAGNOLO or CAMPAG, never Campy.

They can work OK, the spacing is different, but careful mech setup* can get yourself a working system, once the mech is a bit worn or floppy though all bets are off!

You can also head down the rabbit hole of mix 'n match drivetrains as there are many many combos you can use either straight up, or with minor mods but it's not something to get into unless you know what you doing.

ie:

Campag 10 speed shifters with Shimano rear mech and Shimano 8 speed cassette works perfectly

Campag 8 speed rear mech and shifters with Shimano 7 speed cassettes works perfectly

Campag 10 speed shifters with Campag OLD 9 speed rear mech and Shimano 10 speed cassttes works perfectly

Campag 10 speed shifters and Shimano 11 speed rear mech and Shimano 10 speed cassttes works perfectly

Campag 10 speed shifters and Shimano rear mech with alternate cable routing and Shimano 9 speed cassette works perfectly

+ many others!

I've got all the various combos and stuff in DB tables, I should get round to writing a webpage/App to allow you to work out what mix 'n math works, there are a few such pages out there but they;re all a bit lacking in some areas...

* index from the middle of the block not the end and then the errors are minimised at the ends, judicious use of stop screws to save the day!

Also... just noticed The Cycle Clinic offer builds almost exactly like you might want for sensible prices. I've never used TCC though so no idea if they're any good. Not super light though, custom with lighter spokes and maybe less of them would chop some weight off.

Novatec on Archetype

Novatec/Others on TB14

They might do other combos too (or if you call?), I didn't look through them all...

Hope do a campag freehub. Got one as got myself into a Campag shaped hole with a cheap eBay purchase. The Hope freehub meant I could take my old CX wheels and put them on with just a freehub swap and the old Shimano one is pretty cut up anyway
