Any good campsites in the area? Accessible to town for a few evening drinks?
I thought there would be loads but my google search isn't yielding the goods.
I don't think it's Google's fault. There's actually not much camping to choose from near the towns. I've stayed in Camping Le Frene a few times but you'll end up driving down into town on an evening because the hike back up is monstrous. Not ideal if you've had a few sherbets.
Have you been there before? There's so much choice of accommodation from self catering studios to plush chalets. I used to managed it when I was a skint dirtbag. These days (pre-covid anyway) we stay at Riders Refuge because it's just easy when you don't have to worry about your own meals and go shopping and cooking every day.
Have you been there before?
Yes, but about 20 years ago haha. We did the whole fly / transfer thing and i remember it got quite expensive. Any dirtbag skint suggestions gratefully received.
We used to camp at Camping Les Marmottes when we visited Morzine, but it doesn't seem to exist now which is a shame. Was a bugger of a climb back up from town, but was a lovely little site. It was here: https://goo.gl/maps/gm5NfaUNChquyRPL8
Following this for recommendations as we might return to PdS area again in future and preference is usually to camp, having young active kids. Camping Le Frene looks lovely, bonus being the swimming pool!
I've stayed in this block of apartments a few times with mates but it's a bit of a squeeze!
If you're driving, there's a large car park. They're easy walking distance from pubs and supermarkets but away from the noise of the centre. Just get on Booking.com and sort by lowest price.
Not sure what the Riders Refuge pricelist looks like at the minute but they do include free transfers, secure bike storage, tools etc. You also get breakfast and a big evening meal every day apart from the staff day off.
We’ve always camped down in Montriond (since about 2009). The lady doesn’t speak a single word of English (and is a prime example of the crazy French lady stereotype) but it’s a short ride up the river path to Morzine and downhill all the way home at the end of the day. There’s a cafe/bar/restaurant 5 minute walk up the hill and a little shop/bakery for morning baguettes.
It’s always full of bikers (mixture of campers and tents) and doesn’t get boggy if (when) it pisses down.
Also the showers are warm.
Even when we free camp like true dirty bike bums we stay there for a night every few days for a decent shower (my wife is only willing to wash in mountain rivers for so many days before she wants a real shower).
