Hello everyone, I thinking to go to port du soleil area on the beginning of July and I found a nice camping site on chatel, I was wondering if this is a good location to reach the lifts and trails on the area and how hard is it to get to other bike parks like Morzine and Avoriaz?
Thanks in advance.
Not sure where the campsite is but chatel is a nice area. Much quieter than morzine but very pretty. The bike park is a bit of a ride and a climb away or a bus with a bike rack. From the top of the bike park you can ride to morzine pretty easily. Downhill all the way. Getting back is a massive climb which is no problem with the lifts, or a big problem if you miss the last lift. From chatel you can also ride the other way into Switzerland and then to Morzine which is a great scenic ride. Basically it's fairly central in the bike area so lots of riding options around but you do need to plan your day to get home rather than if you stay in Morzine it's downhill from pretty much everywhere
Thanks for the reply, this is the camping site I will stay https://www.oustalet.com
I will drive from the UK, is the car park any good?
Thanks
generally I'd recommend not camping in the alps on a summer biking trip. The weather is very changable, and getting into wet, muddy clothes when you're cold to start a day's riding is miserable. Accommodation is cheap enough not to bother (I've done both, and love camping generally, but will never camp an alps trip again)
Cheers for the advice, I camp at alpes of duex last year an was really nice, was lucky to have good weather 😉, I want to camp because my wife is not a mountain biker and that camping site has a lot of activities and indoor pool so is good for the wife😁
Easy enough to get everywhere from Chatel. There's a free bus service that goes from the town to the bike park. It'll stop on the road for you if you flag it down. They just let you bring your bikes on to the bus (which seems a bit strange the first time).
The bike park is fun but a bit limited. Nice long cross country cycles over to Morzine and Les Gets and Champery. As mentioned, make sure you'r leaving Morzine by 4pm or risk a few big uphill cycles.
There isn't a bikepark in Avoriaz, it's basically just a summer Ghost town and doesn't look anything like the pretty wintertime location. Anyway, as mention, it's a nice spot, bit limited and quiet but it was mid June when I was there for 3 days last year so very early season. We drove from there to Verbier for a few days which is also a nice spot.
Thanks for the reply👍
I will go around 7 days so I want to explore the most I can, cheers for the info on Avoriaz.
