Got a veloce 8 speed setup on my old commuter - The freehub pawls are on their way out - I might be able to bodge it but throwing out a question to the STW massive:

I have a shimano rear wheel going spare - could I fit a shimano 8 spd cassette to it and run it on the campag 8 speed group set? If not what are my options as I don't want to change the groups et as the bike is not worth it?]

could I use an ambrosio on teh 8,9,10 speed compat shimano freehub body?

Sheldon Brown is your friend
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-spacing.html

They are prob close enough to get away with it .

CTC would suggest alternating the cable clamp route http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=28705&p=233480&hilit=shiftmate%3F

one of these maybe if needed http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm

or put a 7 sp shimano cassette on with a spacer as thats still 5mm spacing (obv you lose a gear tho)

cheers canny - yeah was looking at the jtec shift mate - hmm the 7mm cassette with 5mm spacer would seem a good / cheaper option though - many thanks!

Just got a very cheap 7 speed cassette and spacer - Will give me time to service the freehub body on the campag wheel properly and see if it is def knackered or source some parts 🙂

check out this CTC article that shows different options that might work for you.

http://www.ctc.org.uk/desktopdefault.aspx?tabid=3946#Hubbub

not sure if this helps exactly but on my CX i run veloce 10 speed shifters and a sram 8 speed cassette along with any 9 speed rear mech and it will shift just fine (which the article above confirms so should be fairly reliable)

All the above fine.
However the spacing difference is 0.3mm. set the mech up correct for say 3, 4,5, and its bugger all. Just bung a 8 speed Shimano casstte ona Shimano hub. Nice and easy to find. A touch of wear in the mech rollers and it will be fine. I have a set of Record 8 spee shifters for yesr, since Campag went 9 speed. Almost alwsy used them on Shimano hubs and cassettes. Rumour has it that it will work while everything is new but I find a ouch of wear eases things. excessive tweaking is also a danger. I play with my bike way to often for that to become a issue. Worth a try first.
Ambrosio make Campag splined, Shimano spaced 10 speed cassettes. Maybe there's a 8 speeder.I think Miche do. Try retrobike.com as you are very much in that territory.
Perhap I should sell my 8 speed hub and barely used cassette. Interested?

😛 Works a treat doesn't it. Now just wait for the Ergos to poop their pants. Still they're totally rebuildable, but it's a frustrating process.
