I'm planning a repeat of my ride from Edinburgh to Chesterfield of 9 years ago - at the time a year since my Dad passed, now to mark 10 years. I'm planning a slightly different timetable this time of three big days rather than half-full-full-half.

To make that work I need to stay in or very close to Alnmouth and Swainby. Last time, someone on here recommended a pub in Yorkshire which had a field for camping and it really contributed to the whole experience so I'm trying my luck again for any similar hidden gems - pubs with camping or suitable bivi areas.

This is what happened last time.

Just over the hill towards Osmotherly from Swainby (sorry it is a big and steep hill) is Cote Ghyll campsite. My son stayed there on DofE and remarked that is was fairly plush facilities.

There is also camping at Lordstones above Carlton but that is at the very top of an even longer and steeper hill and probably drops you too far East if you continue South(ish) from there the following day. Does have an en suite pub though (check opening mid week).

Both the pubs is Swainby do good food ( Black Horse is my preferred) but check which nights they are open. The Rusty Bike cafe in Swainby is nice and has loads of cycle racks. The village shop is now also a tea shop and get good reports.

Alnmouth: I would, and have, just bivvy on the beach. The couple of miles either side of the estuary has plenty of options.

@thenorthwind - thanks, yes that's a consideration if the weather looks reasonable. If I can get away with just bivvying it would make things easier perhaps.

If you are coming down the coastal path I think there are plenty areas just north of Foxton where you could comfortably bivvi in the dunes. Slightly further north, but Proctors Stead Farm next to Dunstan village, cant remember if they do camping or not however.
