Anyone done it? I've got a trip out there in April and although there's a lot of climbing on the rides planned I'm interested in knowing how brutal they are. I've done rides where 400m in 40km has been hard as it's been over a couple of steep climbs and where 1000m in 60km hasn't felt too bad as it's all been 3-4% just over a much longer distance.
Been out a few times, great place to ride. Fast roads, not too steep, rarely >10%, quiet, considerate drivers, lots of places to stop for a break. The distances and vertical are easier than the UK. How hard it is will depend on how fast you ride.
Was out there in Oct. Climbs mostly pretty steady. If you fancy something steep then there's some wee farm roads that act as shortcuts that are tough.
Try and measure your rides in time rather than distance and you'll be grand.
I live just north of calpe. Follow the vuelta route its gone through the area a few times, inland is mountainous but there are passes and see the climbs as training. April should still be cool, but can get hot so keep an eye on forecast.
Good luck, cafe stops are lovely, drivers respectful and road surfaces typically super smooth.
Was out there last year as the missus was doing an open water 10k race. I booked a cheap hire bike and it was lovely for the 4 nights we were there. Warm riding in April, good roads, and I saw plenty of other cyclists. Learn your Spanish to ask for a coffee and bun and you'll be right.
Shed, was that the oceanman 10k from albir/altea? If so i was there as my friend did it. If you go again let me know as i usually support her. I think the winning lady was from Scotland, i seem to recall she was the only one not wearing a wetsuit.
Very nice riding around there. We based ourselves just outside Benidorm. Stunning around there in April with all the citrus trees.
Well I have to say the day-3 route has me a little worried, 200km or so, 5000m climbing but I could do the 200km no worries, so it's just the up to train for.
Sounds a super area for road riding from what I've heard. Who you going with atlaz?
Just spent christmas in moriara just down the road. Yes the main roads are doable, be carefull with bikemap.net some of the roads in the urbanisations are near vertical.
I spent christmas climbing up a vuelta mountain finish at combre de sol. Averages 14% over 4k and hits 20% at one point.
Go to altea beach front for pealla(?) bestvwe could find.
Who you going with atlaz?

Poolman yes that was the one. My missus was also non-wetsuit. She didn't have a good race; they kept them in the water too long before starting and she got too cold from memory. Plus she had lost weight for our wedding (mainly through cycling it has to be said) so didn't have the warmth of previous races. These were her own words. Michelle is her name, you'd remember if you saw her as she's 6'4"
