9spd chain 8spd cassette does it work?
Yes. Shifting not quite as smooth if using Shimano.
I thought it wouldn't until a pal told me he uses 8sp cassette with 9sp chain.
I think 9sp front mechs may rub but other than that I think you can bodge it.
Isn't the 9sp quite narrow compared to the 8sp?
well i have a road bike that has a 9spd chain and 8spd cassette the rear mech jst wont tune that well.
cogs on 8 speed are .3 mm thicker than 9 speed iirc.
Works fine as does a 7 speed chain- fine means you can make it work/usable not it is as perfect as using correct stuff.
Why not just use the correct chain?
Why not just use the correct chain?
Getting harder to find 8 speed chains - got one for a mates road bike the other week, shop said it was his last one because no-one ever asks for them anymore 😯
good thinking batman (glenh).
Cheers
Buy em on the web then (coffeeking 🙂 )
Normal 8 speed chains are very easy to get hold of. High quality ones are more difficult but the 8 speed chain is far from extinct.
Only works when you're not in the middle of a 120 mile ride, Dez 🙂 Unless CRC's delivery has hit new levels of ace-ness!
Stick a spare chain in your pack then?
i ran a nine speed chain on a mtb for several years using a 8 speed block gave really good mud clearance, only stopped when i could get the xtr or xt shifters in 8 speed anymore, never had any isssies at all, i even used brake outer for shifters as it gave less friction being a tiny bit larger bore

Where do you stop? Spare pads? Spare rims? Not, sir, on your nelly.
I always carry a spare bike in my pack on long rides.
😆
