My 12 year old is trying to rebuild an unidentifiable bike with unidentifiable parts, and is stuck on which calipers he needs.

His fork has vertical, in-line, threaded bolt-holes, while the rear has two, unthreaded holes at an angle too each other.

With that incredibly helpful description, is anyone able to advise on what sort of calipers he might need?

Pictures would help. Sounds like front is post mount, rear is IS mount. If so, should be able to fit any post mount brakes with the correct adapters for the rotor size.

I can advise you to take and post pics 🙂 If you send me a pic I can post it here.

Sounds like the fork is post mount which I think is normal now. The other one is IS mount but those are two holes on tabs that are in the same plane as the dropouts.

If you need to buy brakes, then Clarks are really cheap and decent but will be post mount.

You can get adapters for post mount to IS and vice versa. The only caveat is rotor size. Different bikes and forks come designed for different rotor sizes, so you can get an adapter to fit a larger one up to the maximum allowed size for the fork. If you need an adapter to convert one fitting to another, it adds a rotor size.
