You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all, we're off to wales in a few weeks and were plannign to go up cadair idris, we've never done it before, but it looks like its an out an back ride - are there any extensions to add on to it in the area to make it longer/better/etc.
Does anyone have any other route suggestions in the area that are worth a go? dyfi bike park is fully booked......would like good descending - where good = fast and/or technical.
Just be sure to check the mountain forecast before you leave - it can get quite nasty on the top. It's an out-and-back, unless you want to get on everybody's tits or ride at night by way of footpaths.
Dyfi forest, east of the A470 is your best option for extra stuff. Check out trailforks - it is mainly off-piste, though.
Sorry OP, not been ignoring this thread, but I don't really have any answers and would love the CI issue to be resolved...
It would only need 2.07km of bridleway to make it into one of the best mountain rides in GB, but alas here we are....
The bridleway from the south is a cracking ride up. Very very rideable until very near the summit. LRT to start, then shallowish angle singletrack then rocky gnarr near the top.
It also would link in nicely with various BOATS and bridleways around the northern and Eastern edges.
But the problem is that the footpath from Grwerdydd to Tynyceunant is just that, so you can't 'legally' do the full circuit.
So you have to do a there and back down the nice rocky singletrack, the shallow straight singletrack and then down the bloody LRT.
There is a morsel of ST to bypass a bit of LRT, but it's not much.
TBH I did enjoy the hill at the time, despite the LRT, but when I redid snowdon a few weeks later it brought into focus how mediocre the legal riding on Cadair actually is.
Anyone done the footpath descent? Is it as good as it looks?
I've only ever walked up but for the OP's benefit - potentially could you hike a bike the not legal bit and then join the other legal trails?
If you do the out and back (which I think is great) then don't miss the turnoff on the way back down - it's about halfway down - which is a cracking bit of singletrack. If you do miss it you're just doing fire-road back.
If I recall correctly, you'll go through a few gates, sheep/cow corral and it's not far beyond that on the left (you'll have ridden up the fire road).
Worth it. And the whole thing is rideable from the very top (if you're Dan Atherton) - but if you're not Dan, then 99.9% of it still is 🙂

I guess so but then you'd waste 400m of height loss.
Unless you mean "hike" rather than hike in which case .... 🙂
Thanks all.

we were just going to follow this route on the link below, which looks like it includes your bit of singletrack - but could you confirm?
Its a shame about the access rules in england/wales....I wonder what the footpath is like

Yep, the bit with two lines is indeed the one. Keep left up the fire road and then on the descent turn left off the fireroad.
Interestingly enough, my latest OS map doesn't even have that bit of fire road designated as bridleway any more 🙁

It is on maps.bing.com (changed to OS maps).
The BW out-and-back is decent enough. As above the very top section is severely technical but there's only a bit of that, then it's nicely technical for a long way and gradually gets easier.
A shorter travel bike would be preferable IMO, if you have a choice.
Nearby options = Pont Scethin loop, Dyfi forest, Coed y Brenin.
Are you riding an eeb? If so, Cadair and Pont Scethin should be quite do-able.

yes, we're on eebs.
we did pont scethin a couple of years ago, was nice.
are there any particular routes in dyfi forest? does anyone have a GPX of a good ride.
I hiked a biked up the scree to the north of the summit once on a Trans Wales trip? Went up from the hotel last the tarn. Bit of an undertaking so probably not worth it.
Anyhow, cracking adventure if you can get lucky with the weather like Dan A did...

I can send you a GPX for Cadair Idris and I’d highly recommend Dave @ Bike Corris for guiding duties around that area. He led our group around for around 35km about Corris which was fantastic. Genuinely nice dude who’s pretty active in the community!
On the way down I used the drainage ditch at the side of the track, no water in it at the time, it was a great bit of single track but I got a bit carried away with it and ended up going over the handle bars.
There looks to be plenty of cheek on the hill, including some hairpins down to the lake and a trail that runs over to re-join the main way up/down.
We're up there for. Long BH weekend. Hope the weather treats us better than i. Has been recently.
