I need to replace all the cables on a couple of bikes and I'm building a new one, what's the best gear inner/outer (and brake/inner outer for the one with BB7s)? I normally just use cheapest Shimano, is there any point spending any more than that?

Where's the best place to get a load of it?

I do find that nice smooth shifting doesn't tend to last that long, and a new set of cables normally sorts it (when I eventually get round to it).

Get a length of sp40 outer from parkers and get the inners off crc or wiggle. Usually works out cheaper if you've got a few bikes to do.

What bigyinn said - much cheaper, I normally use clarke cables as that is what the LBS sells, they are fine. I am intrigued by the Middleburn oilers and will give them a go after xmas.

Try Jagwire for a touch of colour or Goodridge for a nicer shade of white or carbon or clear... You could consider sealed ones from Gore... But then you sound sensible, so go for Shimano, you can't fail with them realy.

No need for anything better than SP40 IMO. I could do you a deal ona bundle but the postage might not make it worth it.

Run the gear outers full length, they last much longer that way, fewer cut ends for muck to work it's way inside. Standard shimano stuff is fine, just don't let them fob you off with the coiled outer wire, it's got to be the proper SIS version.

FMJ's improve the power on BB7's quite a bit.

Goodridge on my BB7s and they are great. A little Rock N Roll cable magic on the inners and smooth as silk. Only downer was that the inner cable was only just long enough for my bike (it is a big 29er with Jones bars and downtube - chainstay routing!)

Used a lenght of Avid FMJ stianless tube on the front which has helped firm them up too 🙂

I've found sealed cables work brilliantly over winter with a lot of use, I think you'd benefit on the bike(s) you mention to suffer from deterioting shifting.
