Just wondering here really.
When you build a bike, do you cross your cables ? So for example the gear cable goes over the left side of the steerer tube and then loops over to the right side on the bars and the brake goes over the right hand side of steerer and then over the the left... or do you leave them on the side they're on the back end ?
Yep, rear gear goes around head tube then crosses back over to driveside chainstay. Similar but opposite for rear brake.
It's one of those probably pointless little perfectionist touches that is so satisfying because in theory it makes a difference and is free, so why not 😎
Depends on the frame to a certain extent - with internal routing the entry points will dictate where the cables go. Internally routed brakes can mess it up though if the frame is set for the levers being on the other side.
Crossed over every time if possible, makes a much tidier job with smoother, more controlled cable runs, and usually much less chance of cables rubbing on the head-tube. I genuinely detest having to send bikes out the other way around.
Depends.
It worked quite nicely on my hardtail. Shifter and brake cables under the top tube and crossed just in front of the seat tube.
On my current and previous fs I tried it but wasn’t really happy with the route the gear cable took so kept the cables all down one side of the frame without any crossing.
It’s only free if you’ve not already trimmed the brake hose and gear outer to optimum length without the crossover…😂
Depends, whatever works best for the specific bike, its cable mounts and cable length. I'm not a perfectionist
Crossover. It's about the only thing I hate about my Ripmo. If they'd just put a little more thought in and done the cable ports the same on each side, you could just swap the covers over (single one side, twin the other) and you'd be golden. But they didn't, so you can't, and so the routing for the dropper is horrible.
All to the right normally. Go past the headtube in a single bundle. The different bends help to pull the bundle away from the frame. Does need a lot of cable ties.
What is the point of the bundle thing? I can't think of any particular issues I have with them all separate.
Always crossed over. Cables just seem to work better that way. It looks neater snd seems to keep them from rubbing the headtube when steering. Suppose it doesn’t matter as much on frames with internal routing.
@greyspoke I like it that way. Think it looks tidier and as above it helps pull the cables away from the frame.
