Am currently riding a mk1 Blue pig (that rides brilliantly) but am fed up with the paint quality that scratches if I look at it funny - it looks down right scruffy. I'm now thinking of replacing it with a C456. Can anyone let me know how the ride quality compares?
I'd also like to replicate the head tube angle of the Ragley so do I need the 1 or 2 degree slackset?
You're selling the Blue Pig because the paint chips easily? Really?

That!
I take it you haven't anything useful to add BadlyWiredDog? Have you had a bad day? Try a glass of red wine and listen to some Enya
I didn't mean that in critical way btw. It's just that it seems odd to sell a bike that you say 'rides brilliantly' because the paint chips. You could always strip it down and have it powder coated.
Anyway, your best bet for an accurate answer is probably to mail Brant, he designed both bikes so he's have a pretty good idea of which slackset will get you closest to Pig angles on a 456. I've not riddem a 456, but I'd guess that the frame'll be at least 2lb lighter than a Pig, so regardless of anything else, it should feel a bit sharper under acceleration, leastways that's what I found comparing a Blue Pig to a Ragley Ti.
Edit: I posted this being helpful while you were busy being narky. Anyway, good luck with it all.
I've stuck a works headset in my C456 which gives it pretty Ragley-ish traits. It doens't climb as well as my Mmmbop did, for whatever reason, but it's still capable enough on the way up and very similiar on the way back down. Bit more give in the rear end, which is good IMO- means extra traction and control at the expense of a little responsiveness.
Buuuut the finish on mine is rotten- almost exactly as bad as on an Inbred. I guess that's what makes it an On One! Scratches incredibly easily. I don't mind too much, it looked like crap even before I scratched it, now it looks like scratched crap.
Have you had a bad day btw? 😉
It does ride brilliantly but then so do lots of bikes. Anyway don't we all need an excuse (despite how flimsy others may think it is) to move on to something new?
The quality of the blue pig has been a real let down. Despite being waxollyed it's amazing how much it rusts - much more than my old 456. Living on the edge of the Peak it just can't cope with the gritty conditions. Every tube is covered in surface scratches. Far more than any other bike I've owned, both steel and Al. The paint has even cracked on the seat stays were the the guide screws have pushed through. Yes I know plenty of people would have it painted but I'd rather spend the cash on something of a higher quality.
If you get a painted C456 it will chip and scratch horribly.
If you get a raw finish C456 it will scratch up horribly.
I protected my satin raw one with some sating PU (heli) tape. You can hardly see the tape and the tape has held up well. Where there is no tape there is lots of little scratches.
At first they bothered me. Now they don't. They are battle scars.
If it bothers me that much I can always strip the bike down and respray the whole frame with a better lacquer. I am now doing a lot more work on this kind of coating (did my phd in it) and I have coatings now that I would use and would be a lot better and hold up very well.
But it's a bike frame.
