My current C2W is finishing soon so I'm researching my next purchase. Obviously, it has to be totally impractical to use for its intended purchase (commuting) and I'm thinking a park bike would be a fun addition to my quiver. A full on DH sled is probably a step too far so I'm thinking LLS, 170 to 180 travel and actually capable of being peddled. I'm a shortarse so it needs to be a mullet and I'm not a dentist of IT middle management so it must be under £5k, preferably under 4. I like, but am not restricted to, carbon frames and I'm not averse to buying a frame/fork/wheels and building something myself.

A few frames I'm considering, in no particular order;

Evil Insurgent

Transition Patriot

Banshee Rune

Santa Cruz Nomad

Intense Tracer 279

No ebikes please; I've already got 2, there's nothing in my budget that interests me and I'm not sure if the one bike I'd be prepared to stretch my budget for is even going to be available in the UK.

I'm not one to get militant about the precise letter of the rules about C2W, but I find this sort of blatant piss taking really uncomfortable.

Wouldn’t worry too much as most schemes have dropped any wording to suggest it’s a work bike.

Just had my final Cyclescheme "own it later" deposit and it states the bike would be mainly used for commuting.

"You must use the Equipment mainly for Commuting, although you are entitled to use it for otherpurposes as well;"

It's ok, I think the op lives at the top of a hill and can get an uplift back from work at the end of the day.

Besides all those bikes pedal really well

That’s why I said most.

A step too far, and I'd prefer a V10 anyway...

Has anyone got any experience of the bikes I've listed, especially the Insurgent?

Probably a non-issue as the forum is so slow these days the remaining few users have probably clicked on every thread, but you might get more answers if you changed the title to "what 170mm travel bike?" , the average commuter probably doesn't have much opinion on that!

I was going to call the thread "What Park Bike", but where's the fun in that? 🤣

It's all kind of academic since the OP appears to be purely focussed on reselling it

I'm not one to get militant about the precise letter of the rules about C2W, but I find this sort of blatant piss taking really uncomfortable.

WHY?

When I finished paying for my first one, I called Evans to ask how much I needed to pay to own the bike and do another one. They laughed and said, “Don’t worry about that, you do a new one each year.” Possibly not true, but I have done a gravel bike, a road bike, and a set of Fox forks for the Pivot Mach 6. My wife had access to the GCI (I think that’s the name—Green Commute Initiative, possibly) and she kindly supplied me with a Whyte E160. Never sold any of them, but never turned a pedal in the direction of work.

If you can’t participate in the scheme due to your company's policy, that is annoying. If you’re self-employed, I’m sure you can manage a few tax-back treats.

Why?

Because fundamentally paying tax should be a good thing. It means you've met your own basic needs and contribute to societies as a whole.

I'm on the borderline being of hypocritical here, did I need a titanium road bike to get to work on? No.  Do I ride to work on it though, yes (and a lot of other riding as well). Is HMRC making a net gain on this deal, probably as long as you ignore the existence of my fixie that was actually doing perfectly well as a commuter beforehand, I'm still probably doing enough utility miles on the bike to save them the spending on road repairs and my healthcare.

Just buying a weekend toy, or worse buying a weekend toy and driving to work is a net drain on HMRC.  It's incrementally less free school meals, flood defenses, police, disability support, teacher, foreign aid, etc.

And yes, I'll pre-empt the whataboutism involving your taxes paying Nigel Farage's MP salary and Starbucks paying a lower tax rate than you. But here me out, it's not an either/or scenario.  We can all pay tax, sort out the country and do Nigel out of a job when he's not got anything to complain about.

Heading off the OPs subject really, but that statement can be correct but also allow people to take opportunities of being tax efficient.  It's not a blatant piss take as the government clearly recognise it happens but continue to see the low overhead for it's targeted benefits of increasing cycling as more as a positive than a negative in the overall taxation picture.

Pension contributions are also ways that a general person can be tax efficient.  Would it be a 'blatant piss take' to increase your pension contributions to avoid a step up in tax levels through a pay rise or a bonus?

Anyway, I'm sure we won't agree on a mountain bike website so here's what I would blatantly take the piss with if I were the OP.
