Looking at getting a bike on C2W scheme. We use cyclescheme so any retailers on there are an option. Max of £1k (can go higher but I don’t want to spend more). Will be used for Cannock plus getting some days out in the Peaks.
Am based in derby so ideally would prefer to buy from a shop so I can try the bike. No preconceptionsof want I want. Have looked at the Calibre Bossnut but at just shy of 18st (plan is to lose some more weight) not sure if it would take the beating so a hard tail might be a more sensible option. The Lapierre in the STW giveaway looked good with a dropper post for £900.
What other suggestions do people have?
Make sure that it's locked up securely, at your workplace - include some good locks in your budget. And sort out your insurance, too, as the bike won't belong to you until the CTW period is over and you've arranged to buy it.
I am lucky as my work is a secure site. No chance of someone getting on site and stealing the bike luckily.
You don't actually have to ride it to work robbo - just in case that wasn't obvious. The scheme has a wider perspective than that.
wrt the bossnut how you ride is way more important than now hefty you are. A 9 stone shredder can wreck something that would be 100% all-day reliable for an 18 stone bimbler. So unless you go particularly hard I wouldn't have any qualms about getting the bossnut if you like it.
Yeh I realise I don’t have to ride it to work but there are occasions in the summer where I may want to! Doesn’t seem to be much that compares to the Bossnut. Been looking on and off all day and other similar full sus bikes aren’t as good according to reviews and there doesn’t seem to be much in the hardtail range. All bikes seem to have rockshox recon forks so no difference there. And I can actually go into go outdoors and try one for size. I have already had a look at one and it does look smart. Never had a full sus before.
Previous bike was a 26” on one 456 so whatever I get will be a big difference.
If you work at the same secure site as me, it’s worth seeing what Cyclo Monster near Spondon Asda have.
trek roscoe 7, tubeless ready. 2.8 tyres 1x 10 gearing, dropper. £875ish
My mate has a Bossnut Evo and for the money it looks great. It just needs a dropper post, CRC are doing the Brand-X ones pretty cheap. The rims are tubeless ready too so you can convert it (doesn't come set up). I don't think weight would be an issue, as long as you set up the fork, shock and tyre pressures correctly.
Otherwise a hardtail with say 2.6" wide tyres would be good, I have seen the 2018 Whyte 901 for £999 at JE James.
Sorry, slight hijack -

When did that change then? It's a few years since I had a C2W bike, but there were definitely usage restrictions. Completely pointless of course as there was no way anyone was checking,
The trek roscoe looks good and there is a leisure lakes bikes that stock them 10 miles down the road.
Not going to have any spare money for upgrades until the summer so whatever I get needs to be ready out of the box. What are tektro disc brakes like?
If you work for HMRC, at least half your mileage is supposed to be to and from work. No one has ever checked on me though.
What are plus size tyres like? Don’t want to for the Roscoe if the plus tyres fall out of fashion and become expensive and I have to replace the wheel set. Tried googling for what size tyres I can fit to the 40mm rims but was pretty inclusive. Am ok assuming I can get a non plus sized tyre on in the future.

great, easy to bleed & use mineral fluid
if you want to sit on a 17.5" I've got one at work. email in profile

2.6 will fit easily. I ran 2.25 nobby nics on 45mm rims for a while but I'd say minimum 2.4
Went to have a look at a Roscoe today. Looks really good. Came up smaller than I thought so a 19,5 seems more appropriate than a 17.5 which is not what I would have thought. The tyres look huge though! Going to have another look at the Bossnut tomorrow before making my final decision.
Well our C2W scheme has changed to I can go above £1000 now but don't really want to go above £1200. This means that I could go up to the Trek Roscoe 8 with plus size tyres, SRAM 12 Speed and Rock Shox Judy air sprung forks or go with the bossnut but with the ability to add a dropper post under the voucher value. Genuinely torn as to which way to go. I have never had a full sus and always had hardtails so think I am tending that way. I think the Trek is better standard components so you are compromising a lot to get the full sus capability of the Bossnut in terms of the other components.
Especially for Cannock, a full suss would be a big advantage esp for a less experienced rider. My mate has a bossnut evo, the frame looks as well made as my Nukeproof tbh.
The hardtail will be less maintenance and better for the odd commute.
