Planning this route but most gpx's etc are road based. Rather than loading one of these and then trying to put an off-road route based on it may prove bad....does anyone know of a route or has done one?
Any useful advice much appreciated
The 'classic' off road coast to coast is st bees to robin hoods bay, broadly following the wainwright walking route. There are bits of the c2c sustrans route where you can take off road options but it's not really 'mountain biking'.
try searching all the gpx sites for the rat race route.
Cheers Jekyll I'll give it a go
Mbuk published a proper hard route years and years ago... Not sure I've still got a copy of the map, but basically as follows;
Whitehaven to ennerdale, black sail pass to wasdale head, styhead to langdale, (can't remember) Troutbeck up onto high Street, along and then down to lowther (?), cross Eden Valley to Dufton, up cross fell (northern side) and down to Garrigill and the pick up trad c2c route on railway paths to consett and the Sunderland or Newcastle
(sorry for random capitalisation.. Autocorrect on Android)
PS.... We've done this twice, once an innocent 18 year olds (panniers and carnage) and again in our 30's. Far greater success bikepacking.
St Bee's is a nice place to start and the train stops there

To see where other folks have been.
The Sunderland end of the c2c is nasty and depressing - avoid. I may be biased as I live here.

What he said. Once you get onto the bit after Consett it's all a bit horrible then you have to ride through Washington into Sunderland through bloody endless bar trap gate thingies. I bloody hate them. I also live here, someone has to.
Go down the Derwent Valley and end at Tynemouth, much nicer.
