I'm planning a couple of fund raising C2C rides for 2013 and could do with some advice please.
The first will be a fund raising ride for the local Scout group and will be a mix of adults and Scouts/Senior Scouts (probably ranging in age from 13-18). The route needs to be suitable for younger people of moderate fitness so I was thinking of maybe doing the Hadrian's Cycle route from Silloth to Tynemouth as there will be less climbing and it's a bit shorter than the regular C2C. Does anyone have any experience of this route?
The other is being organised with a mate who's wife is in the last stages of terminal cancer to raise money for the local hospice - St Teresa's Hospice. We hope to get together a group of 6-12 people to do this ride.
The plan was to mix elements of the Sustrans C2C and the off road C2C. We would start from Whitehaven and do the Sustrans route to Keswick but then head for Pooley Bridge via the Coach Road from St Johns Vale.
Then Pooley Bridge and over to Shap - Kirby Stephen - Tan Hill. At this point we could do the Dales but swing up to finish in Saltburn or go from Tan Hill to Barnard Castle on the W2W route and then across to the coast.
For a mixed group how many days would we need - we will expect everyone to have a good level of fitness.
Not done Hadrian's Cycle Way west of Bardon Mill. From Bardon Mill east, it is all Scout/average fitness compatible, apart from a lung busting ascent straignt out of Bardon Mill.

Expect glass to cause many a puncture once you get into the west edge of Newcastle.
A friend and I did Carlisle to Newcastle on Hadrian's cycleway in a day last summer with no training and it was totally fine. It's mostly flat and exclusively on quiet B roads or dedicated cycle paths.
Hopefully this links to the strava route that we did: http://app.strava.com/activities/6089705
That's great - thanks both of you.
I'll check out the Hexham HQ bunkhouse, we were considering the Barrasford Scout Centre north of Hexham but another option is good.
Barrasford's fine, though I suspect it is a bigger detour.

West of Carlisle is Rattling Gate which is more or less on the route, and is lovely.
