Looking to buy some forks from a guy in newquay, agreed price but he has asked about bank transfer, i've done that on here a few times with no problems as you're all cool, trustworthy individuals! but wary on PB as all their guidance says no. Profile all seems legit etc good history of selling and commenting. Should i stick to the rules or go off piste?
any experiences, advice?
I think it'd be very naive to send a stranger a bank transfer for what's presumably several hundred pounds.

I'd go with my instinct. If it feels ok, it probably is, but if not, well, you know.
But yeah, you want security, just in case.
I got shafted on pinkbike a few years ago, £400! Anyone remember Adam Rees? Personally I would never buy anything online I don’t already have in my hand via PPG or bank transfer. Pinkbike is littered with ‘good guys gone bad’
I've sold loads on pinkbike and don;t see the issue with using paypal as long as the buyer is happy to cover the fee.
Wouldn't bank transfer and wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't know me to trust me either
Do it through paypal and suck up the fees.
Just don't. If you get excuses about problems with the PP account, definitely don't.
I only ask people to pay by transfer when they are being dicks about trying to play hardball on price, and that's only to shut them up.
Bought a bike last night off there, did bank transfer but thats only because i physically had hold of the bike at the time (not relying on postage). Suggest to the seller paying by paypal, work out how much it would cost and pay the extra so the seller doesn't get the fee (DONT pay by gift). If its a considerable amount of money to risk then personally i'd want the reassurance and pay the extra couple of quid to have paypal on your side if it went tits up, you'd probably be surprised how little the difference is.
I've sold a few top end items on Pinkbike and have always given them their preferred option. Some have wanted to meet with cash, some with paypal and some with bank transfer. Never had a problem and I always post next working day.
Only time I've bought on Pinkbike we travelled down to South Wales with cash as needed to see the frame.
On here I tend to know who I'm buying from or selling to. I do have a list of names who I wont buy from or sell to having been messed about by them in the past.
On PB its PP every time, on here I'm selective but unlike @Tracey I don't have a list.

Go on post it up 😁 unless I'm on the list then don't bother
I’ve sold a fair few things on PB, decent buy and sell.
Tell him he’s having PayPal if he wants to sell the forks, it’s just not worth the hassle. If they get damaged in the post for example people change. If the forks are hard to get hold of maybe meet in the middle on fees.
You not on the list, in fact I find it a pleasure to deal with people north of the border. 😉
Cant wait till we can get back up their to enjoy the trails although I think we should do some alternative destinations.
Four trips up this year have cancelled and after 12 consecutive New Years celebrations in Pebbles at the same hotel not sure this year will happen.
You have no come back with bank transfer, can you afford to lose the money.
If not, I’d offer to cover the pay pal fees and accept a slightly higher cost myself
Don't do it. Plenty of good people on there but you just never know. I have also heard of profiles being hacked. Not sure if theres any truth in this but not worth the risk.
You’d be silly to use anything but PayPal imo.
Why risk it just do paypal everyone protected.
As others have said, if it's the fees offer to pay a little extra to cover the fees and you also get the protection. If he's still saying no then you have your answer.
I've asked for bank transfer on selling a bike last year on PB but that was only because they guy was focused on beating me down on price. Paying the PP fees would have made it hardly worthwhile so to get the deal done I asked for bank transfer.
I can’t believe you found anyone on PB who replied to your message and that you’ve managed to get so far with a deal.
All my enquiries are met with a complete silence on there!
Are you picking up the parts face to face? - Yes bank transfer is fine.
Are you getting the item posted to you? - No bank transfer is not fine, unless you like being conned. Use PayPal and not gift, make it clear on the PayPal transaction what the money is being sent for I.e. a copy of the link to pinkbike and stating its to purchase X bike/parts etc and its being posted to you.
UPDATE.
So i followed all your advice and asked for PAypal etc. Not a cheep! So obviously some sort of dubious activity!
Beware over on pinkbike! matoakley69 was the user selling. I'm goign to wait a couple more days then report it to PB.
Cheers folk saved me some cash but now I think its put me off 2nd hand forks so now I've got to stump up extra dough for new!
Anyone with 69 in their username is likely to be trouble, unless they are actually born in 69, which is unlikely on PB.
Paypal was the right thing, but don't let one bad'un put you off secondhand stuff. Try on here or a wanted ad. You'll see their activity so will know if they are a regular. I have bought and sold lots on here. Last thing I bought was from Tracey - so I assume I am not on the list 🙂

For what....not responding to you? Thats the norm on on PB as lister says.
Looking at his account he's been on there since 2008, maybe he didn't like the cut of your jib!
Long delays between messages is the pinkbike way. I’ve just bought something on there after about 5 days to have a 4 message conversation. I used PayPal, obviously
I just got a great set of forks from there
Easy transaction arrived in 2 days
Ive bought and sold on Pinkbike and on here and I'm surprised how many people don't have a paypal account.
Paypal is always my preferred option however I have sold bikes, wheels and forks to people who don't have paypal and have bank transferred the monies to me.
Some times it takes ages for the seller to get back and some times minutes.
I would give him the benefit of doubt.

Ha, unlike these guys...

This

and this. Just pay the extra yourself (4% or something) for the extra peace of mind of sending via paypal 'goods & services'.
For what it's worth a decent seller should never ask for bank transfer over PP, even if people offer it to me I still prefer to take payment via PP goods/services.

So now you're dragging the guy's name through the mud. Cool.
Did you ever stop to consider WHY someone wouldn't be keen on Paypal? Especially from some rando with no real presence on PB? Yes, it gives the buyer security. It also gives the buyer ample opportunity to rip the seller off by claiming the stuff was never sent, broken or whatever.
Try looking at things from another persepective before getting on your high horse and condemning him.
Ive bought & sold a few things on PB, including selling my medium HD3 frame to a guy in Turkey, who he said no-one else would deal with as they thought it was a scam.
Struck up a bit of a to & fro chat with him via the PB message, turned out to be a lovely guy who had very little access to the MTB stuff he wanted & the deal sailed through without a hitch.
Also bought new Fox 36's from a guy on there too, again no issues as the history & feedback was excellent.
Incidentally, I was born in '68 & my email address says as much, so...
squirrelking, I'm not dragging anyones name through the mud, i actually dropped the username here in case anyone knew him and could vouch as i always look for the best in folk and treat people as i would expect to be treated and have found the mountainbike world to be full of decent folk in the main.
I'm fully aware of the reasons why people don't use PP and had considered those issues I've bought and sold many bike things based on trust just not from PB and was just frustrated with lack of comms, which is still non existent.
I can also sell you some step ladders (bank transfer of course) if you like so you can get down off your higher horse as it seems bigger than mine! then you might also be able to see it from someone else's perspective as well once you're down
I messaged someone on PB about an e-bike asking if they had original receipt to ensure it would be possible to transfer the warranty (a Trek) no response.
Then saw the same bike on Ebay so messaged on there to ask if the non-standard shock was also available, responded within 2 hours that it wasn't so I asked the same question about the original proof of purchase. No response - Draw your own conclusion from that. Bike was sold 2 days later.

Aye, neither you were.

Blindingly obvious in retrospect.
To be fair to him it sounds like he had you sussed as the sort of person you wouldn't want to do business with if this is anything to go by.
I've reported scammers on PB and the admin have banned them straight away.
I've sold stuff to South Africans, Spain and somewhere I cant remember from PB.
I've had an 18 month delay in message response on PB.
just to add to the whole paypal is good/bad for each party...

Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my choice of words and didn’t consider the full implications of my hastily formed opinions on the more sensitive forum users here. I haven’t reported anything and I was frustrated at the time! Can’t be bothered now! I also forgot how many pedants there are in the world of bikes and forums as well. I’ll apologise to the guy if he gets in touch! I withdraw from this discussion and apologise if I offended anyone. I’m off to ride my bike suggest you do the same!
Lol so I'm "more sensitive" and a pedent now?
You're the one being an arse and throwing about baseless accusations, own it and man up.
I’ll apologise to the guy if he gets in touch!
How magnanimous of you.
little bit strong mate... i have apologised about the PB comments and if i offended anyone and it wasn't actually entirely baseless, perhaps i don't have your experience of buying stuff off PB and was annoyed at the time because of the experience which i have explained and forums are generally where you discuss/vent this kind of crap, which is why i came on here.... If he's your pal then sorry, the other comments were not necessarily directed at you just at forums in general. Well maybe a bit of a dig as you came on so strong so if you took them personally i retract them and apologise for that as well .... can we move on as i have learned enough about life and how to behave from you now?
if i offended anyone and it wasn’t actually entirely baseless
oh! do go on please
Ok i will go on but I really don't know what this game is now?
I've apologised, the basis was poor communication and not understanding the unwritten rules of PB messages and being concerned then tinged with some frustration about it, as I'd been looking for some suitable forks for a while? I perhaps made some ill considered comments about the issue, mentioned someones username when perhaps i shouldn't have, all of which when pointed out i have 'owned', so unless.....
you know the guy? in which case I'M SORRY
you are the guy? in which case I'm SORRY
you have sympathy for guys in that position as maybe you've been in that position? in which case I'M SORRY
I"M just SORRY OK
I’ve bought and sold quite a bit off of Pinkbike. I find the problem with messages is that you don’t always get an email when you have a new message and some times you have to login to see if you have a new message. So if you don’t login in for a few day you do miss messages.
Some times there is aphone number and a quick text to them if you haven’t heard anything helps.
When I sell I always have two clear prices cash on collection or Paypal and delivery. Never had a problem.

still not good enough i'm afaid this is the Woke-ties you're living in.
There can be no apology great enough or forgiveness issued - even for crimes that were never crimes - please continue to repent until the next drama comes along and everyone forgets
take care 🙂
