You could be lucky or you might get done for vat and import duty
Else where in Europe should be free of hidden charges though I think

Pays to shop around eh,

absolutely, shipping a bike to Oz for warranty will cost around £200 each way for a private individual.
If you order online then you will be liable for Import Duty & VAT etc.
Price+Shipping *15% *20%
RRP on the reign here in Oz is £1450 - £1318 without sales tax
add on £100 for delivery/excess baggage £1418
add on Import Duty is £1630
add on VAT it's £1956

a mere £40 saving unless you want evade tax? I thought it was generally considered bad to evade tax round here?

Works the other way too, buying from the UK, no VAT and good exchange rate at the minute, then high shipping (if they will ship abroad, some won't as the manufacturer excludes it), 10% GST to pay at this end.

Works out ok for components but frames not so much.

Don't forget he's eligible to reclaim the gst on leaving Aus if he wasn't living there, that would've made a difference.
