I'm building up a new frame, mostly from spares but I've come up against a quandary. I've got some Hayes HFX9 brakes from a few years ago, but the back caliper seems to be sticking and wont allow the pads to open up enough to get the disk in, I've looked at it and that is about as far as my abilities go with disk brakes!! So should I get the LBS to fix the Hayes and run them until I can afford some nice shiny new brakes or should I just get these and flog the Hayes (to someone who can make them work)? Thanks.

Deore M596 brakes would prob be cheaper than your LBS trying to fix the HFX. The HFX are OK brakes, but nothing special compared to newer stuff.

Have a go at fixing it - just take your time, do lots of reading and ask lots of questions

@Jengledow - I have same brakes (5yrs old) and the pistons stick meaning the brakes drag as the pads don't retreat far enough, LBS has had a tinker but in the end I went with new brakes. I still have them and will try a little maint as if possible I'd like to use them on another build
