So, got new rims on (30i), time to refit tyres.

Hillbilly is going on the front.

Rear is either refit the pretty worn Ground Control, or a slight worn Butcher.

Anyone run a Butcher on the rear?

Opinions please.

(hardtail, doorstep riding, winching up steep road / trail to get to steep / fun trails. All 27.5, 2.3, Grid).

Ta

Found the 2.3 Butcher too square on a i29 WTB rim, still rode it for months though

Fine. Though I found it a bit draggy, more so than a DHR which has better grip too. But if you have a butcher (and matching brand front) then no reason why not to fit it as a rear.

Slaughter rear all year round, local slop, tweed valley, lakes etc, great tyre.

yeah they're great on the rear too, draggy as in grid version but it's character building.

Draggy?  I run 2.8 Butchers on my Moxie and it rolls like a runaway train.

29x2.3 butcher's on both ends of my HT.

It's OK, works nicely enough, grippy of course, but I have been planning to fit something a bit less draggy/lighter, maybe a Slaughter or purgatory?

I really liked the purg when I was on 26" but just didn't click with it on 29", no idea why. Im too tight to buy a slaughter when last year's worn butcher does the job on the back.

Very similar to the op - having to bear in mind a decent road and fire road climb to get to the fun stuff from the door. 650b hardtail and full suss both have a Butcher front, Purgatory rear and reckon it works well.

I’ve got them front and rear on my Smuggler. I prefer it as a rear and certainly don’t find it draggy.

I ride the same trails as you mate , butcher up front and slaughter out back

Aye, it's good on the rear, it's not as outright grippy as a minion but on the other hand they're a little faster and they do slide really nicely which pretty much makes up for it I reckon.
