Open cycle map has it marked as a cycle trail, but it looks like a footpath on the OS map

That seems a tad strong. You may get some tutting, and indeed it may not be the most recinciliatory approach but I'd be absolutely gobsmacked if you got actual hassle.
Having said which, IIRC Pook does some actual access campaigning/ good stuff so I'd suggest you listen to him rather than me 🙂
